It was not too long ago, in the late 70’s, when hip-hop was born. Many people fell immediately in love with the culture, and now, almost 30 years later, it has evolved into a global and universal culture of youths worldwide. Common Ground is an international hip hop showcase that brings together rappers from around the world, let's them perform in their own language, kick their own style, but meet on Common Ground. It's the only place where you'll hear well known MC's from New York, Europe, Africa, Haiti, Puerto Rico and more all spit in different languages on the same stage.
When hip-hop culture came into media spotlight, about 20 years ago, rappers, graffiti artists, break dancers and djs were rising out of the streets of New York telling tales of hard times through rhymes and poetic expression. They developed unique styles and made a point of being heard. It was more than just music, hip-hop was life. Back in the 80's, S.O.B.'s was one of the first venues to bring live hip hop to downtown Manhattan, with artists like Africa Bambatta, Kool Herc, KRS-ONE and Public Enemy. We've continued letting urban artists be heard throughout the 90's and today with cats like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Dead Prez, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Styles P., Saigon and Kanye West. With artists like these consistently stopping by to rock, and the legendary Lord Finesse as host, Common Ground has become one of the hottest underground hip hop showcases in all of New York. The dopest MC's spit flames, unsigned hype ink deals backstage, the crowd gets rocked and history is made almost every month here at S.O.B.'s Common Ground.
