Band Members: God's Illest Creation on the Mic. Tom on Drums. Pete on Guitar. Andy on Bass.
Influences: “G.i.C. & FUnK FACE is a collaboration of four great minds,” says G.i.C., the MC. “We’re trying to do something different for hip-hop. We got the bass player Andy who is a musical genius. We got our engineer and guitarist Pete, a sick guitar player, and we got Tom our drummer. He is a jazz player, but does a lot of hip-hop stuff with us.”
The group’s album The Chapters of Life took a long time to complete. Having had difficulties due to an ex-drummer dropping out while the album was being mixed, the group had to scramble to find a replacement drummer before the album’s release. “We’re trying to do something different, we’re trying to give the people real music, and if they don’t like it, we’ll force feed it to them. That just how we do. The Chapters of Life is not just a CD you’re listening to, but it’s a book. These are the chapters of life,” says G.i.C., “and every chapter is going to tell you something different.”
These four guys, all between the ages of 21 and 25, decided to do something different and take their music to the streets, often playing in the park, on a street corner, or on a subway train. “We’re trying to give the people real music and if they don’t like it…we’ll force feed it to them. That just how we do," said G.i.C. In this collaborative effort, G.i.C. writes the lyrics and Andy creates the baseline.
The group formed when Andy witnessed G.i.C. spitting an acapela version of what would later become one of the group’s first songs, “The Sun” at a poetry reading. Andy called Pete the next day and said, “Yo, I think I found us a frontman.” According to G.i.C, “It started off with me being boys with the bass player Andy and I didn’t even know he was a sick player. We were just cool and we just started making music late into our friendship like a year down the line.” Pete, the group’s engineer, was working in the studio when the guys met. “We did this one track and we were like ‘damn this sounds good’ and from there we just started making music.”
The group’s sound infuses a lot of jazz and funk and there are some funkadelic influences. According to G.i.C., “I don’t see as us just making a certain type of music, it’s more like just four minds colliding and creating one great thing. I think it’s should just be good music, I really don’t put it into a category.”
