Teen admits to jumping on top of 17-month-old girl By Rhys Saunders The Daily Times Article Launched: 04/17/2007 12:00:00 AM MDTAZTEC — An 18-year-old Aztec man charged with the Saturday night stomping death of a 17-month-old girl who was staying at her babysitter's County Road 3010 residence allegedly told San Juan County Sheriff's Office deputies he jumped on the small child.Jose Garcia admitted to deputies during a Sunday interview that he "stepped on the baby's foot and the baby made a screech(ing) noise" Saturday night while he was at his 15-year-old girlfriend's house, an arrest affidavit states. Garcia later confessed he tried to jump over Taegan McKinney, who was laying on the floor at her babysitter's home, and landed on top of the small child instead.The Daily Times is withholding the name of the 15-year-old babysitter because she has not been criminally charged in connection with the infant's death.Although Garcia admitted the incident most likely took place between 8 and 9 p.m. Saturday, he and his girlfriend waited nearly six hours to take the baby's body to a neighbor's house, the affidavit states.By the time paramedics arrived at the neighbor's house west of Aztec at around 2:50 a.m. Sunday on County Road 3008, McKinney was already dead, the affidavit states.Garcia faces one first-degree felony count of child abuse resulting in death, which is punishable by life in prison.( wrong 30 years)Deputies found "shoe impressions on Taegan's abdomen" that appeared to "have a similar pattern as the shoes Jose was wearing," Lt. Tyler Truby said.Although an official cause of death is pending autopsy results from the Office of the Medical Investigator, deputies believe the child died of trauma, Truby said.The 15-year-old babysitter told deputies Garcia came over to her house earlier Saturday and was drinking beer and "had possibly taken too many pills," the affidavit states. She also said she and Garcia were fighting throughout the night, explaining that "Jose had punched a wall in her bedroom, kicked in two or three doors and had choked (her)."Deputies also learned during that interview that Garcia "was talking weird about doing stuff and how he was Lucifer" the night of McKinney's death, the affidavit states.The 15-year-old girl "also told me that Jose has helped her babysit on several occasions, but has never hurt the kids," a deputy states in the arrest warrant.After the deadly incident, McKinney began vomiting, at which time Garcia admittedly "cleaned the baby up" before the 15-year-old took the child into her bedroom to give her a bottle, the affidavit states.Garcia and his girlfriend then watched "a movie and a half" before realizing McKinney was laying "with her eyes half open and limp," the affidavit states.Family members said Taegen will be loved and missed, and was their "baby princess."The Taegen McKinney Memorial Fund was set up at Four Corners Community Bank in Farmington. I am apt to change music at least two or three times a week. I just like all kinds of music. I do like the old funk.
