Politics, history, food, quality beer (obscure micros, English bottle-conditioned ales, but can anything beat a well poured pint of Guinness?), Irish language and ephemera, my Mini, Arts and Crafts-era pottery (Rookwood), Fiesta, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mid-Century Modern, whiskey (Power's anyone?)...
John Hume, Hugh Grant, Ted Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II (Lilibet and I'd knock back a couple Dubonnets and bet on the ponies). It occurs to me perhaps I'm supposed to pitch myself to the people who stumble over my little existence here. So let's ask the question again: Whom would I like to meet? You, if I seem interesting to you. Come join the party. It's cool inside.
Irish trad, Issa (formerly Jane Siberry), Cocteau Twins, 80s Shoe-gazing (Smiths, Cure, Siouxsie, New Order), DnB, House, Jobim, Celia Cruz, Juan Luis Guerra (before he went all Jesus and shit), Shane MacGowan, Morrissey, Tom Waits, Nina Hagen, Kate Bush, Autamata, Ger Wolfe, Elvis Costello, Damien Rice, The Saw Doctors, Pixies, Squeeze, Alison Moyet, Patsy Cline, k.d. lang, Debussy, Satie, Ravel, Bach, Palestrina, Purcell, Tom Jones, Infadels, Hal, a great Belfast-based reggae band called Breag, Lone Justice (and Maria McKee's solo work), B-52's, old school punk (Kennedys, Germs, and of course, the Pistols), Editors, Paddy Casey, The Havenots, and Dr. Dog. I listen to ClareFM online (they took away my Cormacology!!!), and RTE's 2fm and Raidio na Gaeltachta. I also have a weakness for bad eurotrash pop.
Anything Almodovar (particularly High Heels, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). Dr. Strangelove, Krzysztof Kieslowski's Trois Couleurs for the imagery (The Double Life of Veronique is also fantastic), Waiting for Guffman and all the rest, The Winter Guest, Dancer in the Dark, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, Vera Drake, The Longest Day, Maurice, Henry V (Kenneth Branagh), Bright Young Things, Edward II (Jarman), Fargo, La Dolce Vita (Can you beat Marcello Mastroianni for class and style? I think not). I can still repeat long scenes from Sid and Nancy, and can almost remember It's a Wonderful Life line for line.
The Office, The Brini Maxwell Show, Footballers' Wives, Father Ted, Coupling, AbFab, The Kumars at No. 42...
History (typically English), Political (liberal writers like Ivins or Franken). Was once huge into Vonnegut, and like Nuala O Faolain, Jamie O'Neill (At Swim Two Boys is a fantastic read). Reading "The Cradle King" (about James VI and I) right now.
John Hume, Elvia Alvarado, Brini Maxwell.
