About Me

Climate change is the most pressing issue for millions of the world's poorest people. It is vulnerable people in poor countries that are affected first and most seriously. Climate change is the most significant single threat to development; it could undo decades of progress in fighting poverty.

182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by the end of the century. Many millions more throughout the world face death and devastation due to climate-induced floods, famine, drought and conflict.

The poor have not contributed to global warming and yet it is they who will suffer hardest. It is time to change the climate.

Christian Aid is now campaigning to tackle climate change. The UK government, businesses and all of us need to take action in order to reduce CO2 emissions by 5% each year if we want avoid catastrophic changes to the planet.

Christian Aid practice what they preach. It reduced its CO2 emissions by 5.6% in 2006/07. Full details can be found here.
Here's an important message about climate change...

Christian Aid works in 50 countries, helping people regardless of religion or race to improve their own lives and tackle the causes of poverty and injustice.

Bangladesh cyclone
In November, tropical cyclone Sidr hit thirty districts in southern Bangladesh with winds of up to 155 miles per hour affecting more than eight million people, killing over 3,000 and destroying 1.2 million homes.
Christian Aid, through its partners in Bangladesh, was quick to respond and launched an emergency appeal. For the latest information on the situation in Bangladesh and to donate to the appeal click here . Thank you.
Africa floods
Floods across large swathes of east and west Africa washed away homes, crops and livestock leaving hundreds of thousands in urgent need of food and shelter in August and September 2007.
This disaster was largely ignored by the UK media. Once again, Christian Aid was there supporting relief efforts and continues to assist today. Find out more information and donate to the appeal here.

My Interests

Climate Changed Campaign
UK CO2 emissions account for 2% of the global total. But the activity of UK companies worldwide raises that share to a huge 12-15%.

Christian Aid is calling on the government to make it law for UK companies to give a full account of their CO2 emissions in their annual report. They also want companies to publish a full account of their global carbon footprint in their annual reports, and to commit to a 5% cut per year in their carbon emissions. You can help by sending an email to Barclays, International Power, Morrisons and Gordon Brown.

Your email can help Britain make a real difference to the fight against global warming.
The Government's draft Climate Change Bill calls for 60 per cent reduction in carbon output by 2050.
But Gordon Brown says he's open to a bigger cut.
So help us keep up the pressure for a 80 per cent cut. You really can make a difference by emailing your MP now.

Cut the Carbon March

The longest protest march in UK history has now come to an end. Between July 14 and October 2, a team of 18 marchers from the UK and countries already feeling the effects of climate change, walked more than 1,000 miles across the UK to raise awareness of how the changing climate is affecting poor countries. They met with thousands of supporters, MPs and businesses asking us all to Cut the Carbon. There were rallies in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham, Cardiff and London which were supported by celebrities such as Leonardo di Caprio, Lemar, Terra Naomi and Greta Sacchi. Here are some of the highlights...

Mohamed delivering a giant Jaffa Cake to United Biscuits
Following pressure from Christian Aid, United Biscuits has announced that by 2020, it aims to reduce its carbon footrprint by one third of its 1995 emissions.

Show your support for the march by emailing Gordon Brown. Sign up to the Cut the Carbon Shoelace Petition.

Christian Aid's Eco House at Grand Designs
Soul singer Lemar, who performed at the Birmingham rally, recently travelled to Uganda to visit various projects supported by Christian Aid. This report shows how climate change is already making life more difficult to farmers and how Christian Aid is helping.
This is what Christian Aid is doing - BBC celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin visited Kenya with the charity to see examples of life-saving climate-adaptation projects in action.

Industrialised nations must pay billions of pounds to help poorer countries tackle global warming if millions of people around the world are not to be consigned to endless poverty. Read our new report Truly Inconvenient .
At least one billion people will be forced from their homes between now and 2050 as the effects of climate change deepen an already burgeoning global migration crisis. A new Christian Aid report, Human tide: the real migration crisis warns that the world is now facing its largest ever movement of people forced to flee their homes. The predicted numbers of displaced people could dwarf even those left as refugees at the end of the Second World War.
Coming clean: revealing the UK's true carbon footprint Christian Aid's report challenges the UK government's claim that the country is only responsible for 2% of global carbon emissions and argues because of the UK's global economic reach, there should be a greater onus on us to cut emissions.
