It’s hard to look at the TV or newspaper without hearing about the devastating threat global warming poses. But UK emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, are rising – despite Government promises to cut them.
This is why Friends of the Earth launched its climate campaign, The Big Ask, to call for a new law requiring successive governments to make annual cuts in emissions.
After 170,000 people contacted their MP about the campaign, the Government caved in and promised to introduce a Climate Change Bill in 2007.This is a big step forward but the proposed Bill doesn't go far enough. It doesn't even count carbon emissions from aviation!
Friends of the Earth want MPs to insist on a law which makes governments, now and in the future, properly accountable for cutting emissions and which ensures that Britain does its fair share to prevent dangerous climate change. That means a Climate Bill that sets annual targets for cutting carbon dioxide and includes all of the emissions Britain is responsible for.
MPs will vote on the Bill this autumn. We need to make sure they get the message loud and clear: the time for action is now! We need a strong climate change law.
Join the Big Ask and let's make it happen. march for climate change (Send an email to your MP about this now.)
