Thank You - The Story of
Sly and The Family Stone
Thank You will be the first authorized book to discuss one of the most innovative groups popular music has ever known: Sly and The Family Stone, a band that sparked a revolution from late 1966 untill early 1975.
Their story will be told in a chronological, year by year, fashion. From the early years up to the current day, Thank You will reveal the true extent of the group’s career. It will take the reader back to the early 1950s and 1960s with extensive chapters on the Stewart Family, the Viscaynes, Sly’s roots in the niteclubs of San Francisco and the invaluable experience of working at Cougar Productions/ Autumn Records. Thank You will also follow the history of each individual member, and the two acts that formed the basis of the band, Sly and the Stoners and Freddie and the Stone Souls.
Extensive chapters tell how The Family Stone started out at Rich Romanello’s Winchester Cathedral, how they were discovered and brought to the public by David Kapralik, and how they reached their zenith at Woodstock. Thank You will focus on music and the positive achievements of Sly’s career, but will also discuss its downside and how things all came to an end.
Thank You will also contain many rare illustrations including photos, memorabilia, posters, advertisements and concert flyers as well as an extensive discography. The book will delve deep into the history of related projects such as Little Sister, Joe Hicks, 6ix, Graham Central Station, Jerry Martini’s Rubicon, Rose Stone’s solo career, and will follow each member through the mid 70s, 80s, and 90s into the new millennium.
Thank You is the result of prolonged and intensive research, including over 200 primary interviews, as well as magazine, newspaper and library archives. Quoted are those that lived it, including all the band’s members: Sly Stone, Freddie Stone, Rose Stone, Cynthia Robinson, Jerry Martini, Greg Errico, Larry Graham, and later participants Gerry Gibson, Pat Rizzo, Vet Stewart, Rustee Allen, Andy Newmark, Bill Lordan, Sid Page, Bobby Lyle and Vicki Blackwell.
Anticipated release date: early 2009.
