MY CAREER BEGAN AT K T K R 1310 AM - TAFT, CA. IN THE SUMMER OF 1980* IN 1981 I MEET DUFFY HOOKS III THEN SIGNED TO RAPPERS RAPP RECORDS - NOT ONLY BECOMING A MEMBER OF THE WEST COAST FIRST OFFICIAL RAP GROUP ...BUT I ALSO BECAME THE FIRST WHITE MC...IN MODERN HIP HOP.......NOT THAT ANY ONE GIVES A DAM , AND WHY SHOULD THEY ? BUT... JUST TO SET THE 12" RECORD STRAIGHT.... LONG BEFORE THE BEASTY BOYS, 3rd BASS, VANILLA ICE OR EMENEM EVEN TOUCH A MIC. I HAD ALREADY RECORDED A DOZEN OR MORE RECORDS.. FOR ME...NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSABLE...IF NOT FOR MRS. LOUISE E. MANN, OWNER OF K T K R 1310 IN TAFT, CA. ...( For 3 years) FROM 1977-1980...I BUGGED HER RELENTLESSLY . TO LET ME HAVE A RADIO SHOW....FINALLY IN THE SUMMER OF 1980...I CAME TO HER WITH 5 LOCAL SPONSERS...WHO PAID CASH UP FRONT FOR 3 MONTHS OF 30 second RADIO SPOTS. IF SHE WOULD GIVE ME A PROGRAM....SHE PUT ME ON THE AIR THE FOLLOWING WEEK...THRU THAT .. I MET DUFFY HOOKS ... I AM FOREVER GRATEFULL TO MRS. MANN & DUFFY HOOKS....MAY GOD COMFORT THEIR SOULS ... HAD THE WEST COAST NOT GOT INTO THE RAP GAME IN 1981...IT MIGHT HAVE REMAIND A REGIONAL EAST COST THING ... WE PROVED IT COULD BE DONE SUCCESSFULLY OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK...AT FIRST WE MET A LOT OF RESISTANCE...THE MIND SET AT THAT TIME..WAS IF IT WASN'T OUT OF NEW YORK...THEN IT WASN'T REAL RAP....NOT TO MENTION THAT THE WEST COAST...AT THAT TIME WASN'T REALLY INTO RAP...WE LIKED THE R&B / FUNK IN YOUR TRUNK ... SO DUFFY'S IDEA WAS TO INTRODUCE WEST COAST RAP...OVER R&B / FUNK TRACKS...I GUESS IT WORKED...WE MADE IT UP AS WE WENT ALONG... WE HAD TO !WHILE THE EAST COAST RELIED HEAVELY ON THE HARD EDGED BEAT BOX - LL COOL J - TYPE RAP. DUFFY STUCK WITH THE R&B STYLE RAPS ... IT WAS A DIFFERANT MIND SET ...HERE ON THE WEST COAST... WE HYAD OUR OWN CULTURE... HIP HOP & RAP ... IS REALLY AN EXPRESSION OF WHO YOU ARE & WHERE YOUR FROM...IT'S A REFLECTION OF THE INNER ...YOU !.....WE BEGAN TO RAP ABOUT BAD TIMES, POVERTY AND THE GHETTO STREETS. ALMOST UNHEARD OF AT THE TIME...*IT WAS WHO WE WERE !!!UP UNTILL THEN OUR RECORDS WEREN'T WIDELY ACCEPTED OUTSIDE OF THE WEST COAST. WE REALISED WE COULDN'T BE NEW YORK... SO WE WENT ANOTHER DIRECTION... WITH KIMBERLY BALL SINGING ( "I CAN'T STAND IT" ) CAPT. RAPPS BAD TIMES LED THE WAY... IT WAS OUR FIRST BIG RECORD, AN INTERNATIONAL HIT. THE FORMULA WORKED. PEOPLE LIKED IT..WE FOLLOWED THAT UP WITH RADIO ACTIVITY RAPP, EROTIC CITY RAPP, WHEN DOVES CRY RAPP, STATE OF SHOCK RAPP AND A FEW OTHERS. * IT WAS WHO WE WERE. IT WAS WHERE WE CAME FROM. WE RAPPED ABOUT THE THINGS WE SAW AROUND US. FROM MELROSE TO SKID-ROW WE BEGAN TO TELL STORYS WITH OUR RAPPS, STORIES PEOPLE KNEW TO BE TRUE.. IT WAS UNLIKE ANYTHING COMMING OUT OF NEW YORK. * We Were doing showes up and down the State,,Wasco, Shafter, Riverside, Stocton, Sacto, Portorville, Bakersfield, El Monty, Delano, Long Beach, Eves After Dark, Snooty Fox, Los Angeles, Fresno...every where ! Our Break Dancers "L.A.s SHAKE CITY" Often performed with us , and were featured in the movie "BREAKIN" BECOME A PART OF HISTORY..JUST LIKE THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP !!!* A 1978.....VINTAGE WEST COAST RAP RECORDING......PRE-DATES "RAPPERS DELIGHT" & "Kingt Tim III"* IN 1978....A WEST COAST BASED LABEL..AVI RECORDS...RELEASED...CASPERS..."GROOVY GHOST SHOW" A 12" SINGLE......A FULL YEAR & A HALF PRIOR TO THE SUGARHILL GANGS "RAPPERS DELIGHT" & "King Tim III" "THE WATTS PROPHETS" WERE A LOS ANGELES BASED GROUP...WHO'S SPOKEN WORD... RHYMED ON RECORDS...WAY BACK IN 1968... IN THE HIP HOP GAME...THESE WERE JUST HITS & MISSES...AVI WAS NOT A RAP LABEL...BUT...THEY PAID ATTENTION TO THE STREET...AND PUT OUT THE FIRST RAP...AND THE WATTS PROPHETS...DIDNT REALLY LOCK THEIR RHYMES TO A BEAT...SO THE WEST COAST SAT IDLE..FOR NEARLY 3 YRS..AFTER THE RELEASE OF CASPER...UNTILL 1981 WHEN DUFFY HOOKS EMERGED ON THE SCENE. THE TRUE HISTORY ! I'VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE THIS BEFORE....untill now! THE 'WEST COAST POPLOCK' WAS CUT FOR $300 RAPPERS RAPP FIRST RECORDED AT. * KSR STUDIOS / TAFT BUILDING / HOLLYWOOD & VINE ST. * DISCO DADDY & CAPTAIN RAPP WERE THE WEST COAST" FIRST RAP DUO...* THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP. WERE THE WEST COASTS FIRST RAPP GROUP. c. 1981 RAPPERS RAPP RECORDS. LOS ANGELES. CA. * THE "GIGOLO RAPP" c. 1981... UTILIZED MUSIC FROM RICK JAMES' "GIVE IT TO ME BABY" * LATER IN NOV 1981 THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP USED THE SAME 24 TRACK MASTER OF THE "GIGOLO RAPP" TO RECORD "RAPPIN' PARTY GROOVE" THE RICK JAMES GUITAR & BASS & KEYS , WERE CHANGED. BUT THE DRUM TRACKS ARE THE SAME. * THE BUDGETS FOR THOSE FIRST TWO RECORDS WAS UNDER $ 300 EACH and we only had 3 hours to complete the project ...thats music, vocals, and mixdown. ....WE ALL RECORDED OUR VOCALS ...IN ONE TAKE.* EXCEPT FOR MACKERMOE & MYSELF THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP WERE ALL STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL ONLY 16 TO 19 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. * "WEST COAST POPLOCK" IF YOU LISTEN CLOSE YOU CAN HEAR RONNIE HUDSON TURNING THE PAGES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SONG, RIGHT AFTER HE SAY'S " CAN I GET A RIGHT ON CUZ " * RAPPERS RAPP RECORDS WAS THE PARENT CO. OF MANY EARLY WEST COAST RAPP LABELS..ie...STREET PEOPLE...HITTS...FLASH...STREET THUG. MAGIC DISK ,PREMO, & LE VIC WERE JUST A FEW....and...it was...* THE "RADIO ACTIVITY RAPP" .. sparked * "MACOLA RECORDS" INTEREST IN RAPP ! BY 1983 ...THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP...HAD GROWN TIRED OF THE BRAGGADOSIOUS / PARTY TYPE RAPP THAT WAS POPULAR AT THE TIME. / "IN "83" OUR MUSIC TOOK A TURN TOWARD THE DARKSIDE" ..musicaly speaking......TRUTHFULLY BY 1983 RAPP WAS FAST ON ITS WAY TO BECOMING ...the "NOVILTY" .."JUST A FAD"...THAT EVERYONE SAID IT WOULD BE.....BUT 1983...MARKED A TURNING POINT... in 1983 IT WAS GETTIN HARD TO WALK PAST THE STREET CORNER HUSTLERS , THE HOMELESS, GANG BANGERS..& THE CRACK ADDICTED.........AND GO IN A STUDIO AND RAPP ABOUT HOW "FLY"..&..HOW "COOL" WE WERE...WHILE MANY OF OUR PEOPLE WERE SUFFERING ...IN 1983, THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP , TACKLED THESE ISSUES.. EXPOSING THE HARSH REALITIES OF WEST SIDE GHETTO LIFE...* CRACK DEALIN * CUZ * BLOODS & * GANG BANGERS * AIDS , * DOMESTIC VIOLANCE, * WELFARE...* "STREET RAPPS" ...WE CALLED 'EM......OUR SONGS TOLD OF REAL LIFE... IN THE GHETTO.....
DUFFY HOOKS NEVER TOUCHED ALCOLHOL OR DRUGS AND NEITHER DID THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP SUPER PRODUCER, RICH CASONS HIT SINGLE "2001 BOOGIE" WAS THE TRACK JIMMY JAMM & TERRY LEWIS USED TO CREATE THE MUSIC FOR CAPT RAPPS 1983 HIT "BAD TIMES (I CAN"T STAND IT)" c.1983. JIMMY JAMM AND TERRY LEWIS HAD JUST LEFT THE TIME AND WERE LOOKING TO MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELFS AS PRODUCERS. IT WAS BY A CHANCE MEETING THAT THEY LINKED UP WITH CAPT. RAPP . THEY CAME TO THE STUDIO, LIKED WHAT THEY HEARD AND THEY LENT THEIR TALENTS ON TWO TRACKS "BAD TIMES" ( I CAN'T STAND IT)" & " COLD WIND MADNESS" WHICH WAS USED FOR ICE T' DEBUTE SINGLE "THE COLDEST RAPP" c. 1983 EARLY RAPPERS RAPP RECORDS, USED REAL MUSICIANS THAT HELPED PIONEER THE WEST COAST SOUND. * WHEN CAPTAIN RAPP RECORDED "BAD TIMES " HE HAD NOT YET FOUND A FEMALE VOCALEST...* HE FOUND KIMBERLY BALLS CARD POSTED ON THE STUDIO WALL...SO HE CALLED HER UP...SHE AUDITIONED OVER THE PHONE... AND THE REST IS HISTORY * IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE NOW BUT BACK IN 1981-82 RAP WAS STILL A PHENOMINAN , MOST PEOPLE IN LOS ANGELES HAD NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN A REAL LIVE RAPP GROUP. SO WHEN THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP PERFORMED WE WERE OFTEN MOBBED BY THE GIRLS AND HAD TO BE RUSHED OFF STAGE (IT WAS CRAZY) .* OR MANAGER E.J. JACKSON HAD TO HIRE SECURITY .
* My Career Began In The Summer Of 1980 As A DJ / Music Director At KTKR 1310AM In Taft Ca. The Following Summer in 1981 ....I Meet Duffy Hooks He Signed Me As A Rapper to his New Label RAPPERS RAPP DISCO CO. Los Angeles' First Rap Label. In Nov. Of 1981 THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP recorded our first record "RAPPIN PARTY GROOVE" bw "RAPPERS RAPP THEME" * THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP * MC FOSTY * LOVIN C * MR. ICE *MACKER-MOE * KING MC & myself * DJ FLASH ) ..Earned $69.00 .Each For That Record. KING MC STILL HAS HIS UNCASHED CHECK. * DISCO DADDY & CAPTAIN RAPP, EARNED ROYALTIES OF $75 EACH for "GIGOLO RAPP"* MCA RECORDS AND AVI RECORDS INC. RECORDED THE WEST COASTS FIRST RAP ALBUM IN 1982. ENTITLED "SEXY BABY" THE ARTISTS WERE THE RAPPERS RAPP GROUP USING THE UPDATED NAME "DARK STAR" ...COURTSEY OF DUFFY HOOKS & RAPPERS RAPP RECORDS.* RAP WAS SO NEW..MCA ADMITTEDLY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO MARKET THE ALBUM. * During the early to mid 1980', Duffy Hooks, His Brother Mikel Hooks and Cletus Anderson Put Together A Family Of DJs Rappers Promoters ,& Young Producers* Rich Cason..* Disco Daddy & Capt.Rapp, * Rappers Rapp Group, * Ice T, * DJ Evil E , * DJ Antron , * Ronnie Hudson, * Jimmy Jamm & * Terry Lewis, * The Black Diamond Band, * D. Casteel, * DJ Sparkel, * Sir T and several others Who worked for Several Years with Little or No Pay..But we survived and had A Lot Of Fun Recording & Performing..WHAT ARE NOW CONSIDERED BY MANY ..TO BE WEST COAST CLASSICS.....YOU LISTEN....YOU DECIDE ! THE TRUE HISTORY !!! * AT FIRST MOST OF OUR DEALS WERE DONE WITH A HAND SHAKE. AND THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH. Later We Signed With E.J.Jackson Mgt. Owner Of The Jackson Limosine Service, In 1983 We Worked With KGFJ Radio On Their Annual Stay In School Concert Tour, We Performed At All The L.A. High Schools...( Does Anyone Out There Remember That ) LEAVE A COMMENT ! * In The Beggining Rap was A Regional Thing ..With No Media or Major Label Support...* Duffy & Cletus had a hard time selling our Records outside of the West Coast...although eventually, we did break into other markets.,Atlanta, Memphis,..Dallas ,..Chicago...Miami, and a few other Major Citys....fourtunatly...we had the support of the streets....The People... and with that we were able to sell enough records here in California alone....to keep us going. .........Thank You Cali. * I'VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE THIS BEFORE....untill now....At First Duffy was doing all the Selling Himself ..from a Pay Phone......I remember Duffy & I would ride a buss to the Greyhound Bus Station downtown L.A.... buy a stolen phone card for $1 . and start calling One Stops and Mom & Pop record stores from a list that he compiled from his days as SALES Mgr, at ENJOY RECORDS . Now......that's some Grass Roots Sh_t right there...I got to hand it to Duffy ...he knew how to Sell Records...So Did Cletus...Duffy was a Hustler.....* Prior to moving to L.A..He worked with ..Silvia Robinson' (SUGARHILL RECORDS) brother ...Joey Robinson .at ENJOY RECORDS After seeing their success ...* Duffy and his father packed their bags and caught a GREYHOUND WEST... he was determined to start a West Coast counterpart to Sugarhill. * In The Begining Duffy really expected to sell thousands of records on the East Coast. But They Shut him Down...Right From The Gate...If It Wasn't Comming Out Of New York...No One Would Even Listen To It.* So began The West Coasts Long Hard Struggle To be accepted by Raps Elite. Truthfully Duffy never anticipated that . That Rivelry That We Felt Early On would later became famous between the East & the West Coasts
