Royal Jones A Dear In The HeadLights

New York City, NY (PRWEB) April 19, 2007 -- Born in Methuen Massachusetts, New Hampshire's Royal Jones (RJ) began his collaborating in the late 70's with Nancy Rosenberg on The Stars Weren't Right in Harvard Square.

Upon moving to Boston, he studied voice with Ed Mousally at the Community Music Center on Warren Ave. He tells me, "I was so devoted. I recall puking on the steps to the place. I could never turn back. (I was just) so serious intending never to miss a lesson". Somehow in the process of life itself I've become jazzy..."Royal Jones a Dear in the Head Lights"-
In the trendy east village of Manhattan you'll find the self anointed king of quirk' funk poet Royal Jones. He is going from door to door hanging his promo posters and giving away free CDs and eye catching business cards. All this in the hopes of garnering a sale or two of his new CD which was recorded in NYC in 2007 at East Side sound studios. Engineered by Marc
Urselli. It was released April 11 2008.No balloons, no fan fare. just a few novenas from the Salesian sisters of e12 st and Avenue A"Yes that's me in the Royal Jones Tee shirttrying to enticeI wouldn't say I'm desperate but I'd hate to think I recorded this wonderful CD in vain. I simply have no management or promotional skills. I am no spring chicken either"Jones stresses
Assisting Royal Jones on this eclectic acoustic funk set produced by
Janice Friedman (who also plays all keyboards as well as collaborating on 5 songs)is legendary Buddy Williams on drums: Soulful Leo Traversa on bass: Rhythmic Rogerio Boccato on percussion: Melodious William Galison and powerhouse Lily White all shining big time on their guest spots. Completing this well rounded original offering of jazz/funk are Myoshi Marilla and Chevis Packer who add their great harmony spice to the mix for 5 of the 11 songs. 9 of the 11 songs were written by Jones with
Various collaborators. The new set also features two cover songs written by Dennis Belfield 'Smokin' Room' and Alee Willis and David Lasley's 'Come What May'
Indescribable and full of surprises and originality..."somehow in the process of life itself I've become jazzy....a 1st for me.... performing with a live band is so thrilling and Ms Janice is such a true 'Jazz Pro' having worked with Woody Herman , Milt Hinton as well as Marian McPartland ".
I finally have arrangements like a Tony Bennett or a Tiny Tim might....
Jones quips" they told me to get down.....and I did"....
What is the genre? It's been called acoustic acid funk...trip hop jazz a flava alternative
The jury is still out on this...I pray there's an audience for it -whatever classification it may happen to fall under.
The musicians on this CD are all top notch. I can't wait to get us on the road and deliver the funk fun...so Git your Jones as he pleads to the passers by in Tompkins Square Park .
..Release party to be announced shortly in NYC...Royal Jones has recorded 3 CDs since arriving in NYC in the 80s

Influences: My big sister Ann took me to Simon's in Salem to buy the monster mash..i ended up with Mashed Potatoes..the rest is history...The story of my Royal Jones Influenced at a very early age by stacks of 45s (singles) sold at cut rate prices in the early 60s.My earliest memories include the phonograph players that played 78 rpm as well as 16s ....I however never used that 16 speed. Alvin & the Chipmunks were the only 78s I recall vividly however. My sister brought me to buy the Monster Mash, it was sold out. Instead I bought Mashed Potato Time by Dee Dee Sharp .What did I know? Something was getting mashed was my 5 year old reasoning. A soul addiction was born. Some of the divas who fed the addiction were...in no particular order ...."Not Me" by Rosetta Hightower and the Orlons on Cameo-Parkway, Darlene Love with the Blossoms/CRYSTALS He's A Rebel and He's Sho the Boy I Love on Philles records. Party Lights by Claudine Clark...Jamie by Eddie Holland, The entire Mary Wells Vintage Stock lp, the Supremes Come See About Me, The Sam Cooke medley from the Copa lp...the Shangri-las Give Us Your Blessings stirs memories, Judy Clay and Billy Vera's Storybook Children stirred interest and most importantly, last but never least 'Martha (Reeves) and the Vandellas' Greatest Hits and the magnificent classic lp WATCHOUT....I was madly in love with the SOUND of Young America courtesy of MOTOWN. Those were the days.....I'll treasure forever. Thanks Berry Gordy and Holland Dozier Holland and Marvin Gaye, Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Louvain Demps, Jackie Hicks and Marlene Barrow, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, The Supremes, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and Marvelettes and Liz Lands and Hattie Littles for all the enjoyment you provided me with back then and recently with all the unreleased recordings finally seeing light of day at Hip-o....now buy my CD.....xoI just love anything by the late great Syreeta Wright whose voice had me hunting for anything she happened to be featured on . I was hooked. A tremendously talented individual. I spoke with her on the phone at length once. She was so sweet and got a kick out of my gushing and invited me to meet her which I never got to do....What a sweet spirit! Another angel hovering over us...
Sounds Like: Getcha ears on and do tell me...Is it Flip Wilson's Geraldine, Tiny Tim perhaps? I'm flattered that you even listened....Likened to "a disco Neil Young",an "amish Sylvester",the soulful Ms Gladys Knight , the late great Curtis Mayfield ..imagine? Are People just being nice?...any similarities to Elvis, Bowie, Simply Red ,Anthony and the Johnsons,Asha Puhthli etc are just plain flattering mutterings written here & there ... low on the totem pole of soul I love any reviews I can muster ...bring it on...anymore? .......Got ears? Get a listen to RoyalJones....thank you all! ....both modest and overly self conscious and quite reserved Royal Jones' cringeometer rises when he is complimented or compared to such ROYALTY of music....Love me and I'd be so darn happy....Easily spent energies saved for performing live .Got to psych myself up real good....need to be delivering the funk as it should be.... right on time and sold out the back of the truck. 'no two ears hear the same' can't be lame regardless....so funk this! Jones possesses a fine sense of self deprecating humour ,apparent while interviewing the odd eclectic 'diva wanna be' ...when asked about his current style he is anxious to discuss his new genre which is quite simply "accoustic trip hop acid funk fringe pop" tinged with......from the ever irish "Bitta Ole Tool" see him at the Nuyorican Cafe (date TBA)release party for A Dear in the Head Lights arrives 041109
