MEDIA RELEASEMonaco’s famous La Rascasse bar have released a unique compilation album featuring some of the best unsigned rock and roll bands in the south of France.Headed by Monaco’s adopted son Julian Lennon, the album is set to uproot the global compilation genre, and deliver some of the best sounds to have come out of the French Riviera. With their unique performance of songs by Led Zeppelin, Beck and Brian Ferry, coupled with credited originals, five emerging bands have come together under the title La Rascasse Volume 1.Music Guru and co-producer of the album, Marc Toesca, says “Many places in Europe have made a compilation album, such as Buda Bar and Café Del Mar, but they are traditionally soft, mood music. This is rock and roll, roots music.â€Featuring on the album are Julian Lennon, Blah Blah, Waste, Caligagan, Ozcar and Pascal Mono, who shot to stardom after obtaining record scores on the French television reality show Star Academy 5.“We chose these bands because they are the best. They have played for a long time at La Rascasse, they’re good musicians with good characters,†says Christophe Gallas, manager of La Rascasse and co-producer of the album. The bands’ legion of fans across Europe will recognise popular originals, such as Caligagan’s “I can see tomorrow†and Blah Blah’s “Spinnin’ roundâ€, composed by long-time friend Julian Lennon.Pascal Mono delivers “En Sommeâ€, the only French song on the compilation and taken from Pascal’s popular album “Intactâ€, produced under Universal Music.Three bands also perform one cover song each, recreating classics like “Going to California†by Led Zeppelin (Pascal Mono), Beck’s famous “Loser†(Waste) and “More than thisâ€, an 80’s favourite covered by Brian Ferry and performed on this album by Ozcar.“The covers show the atmosphere that each band brings to the gigs they play, their originals are great and deserve to be heard,†says Marc, creator of record label Monte Carlo Records.Julian Lennon presents a song, “Good to be lonelyâ€, which also features on his album “Photograph Smileâ€. A part of the La Rascasse ‘family’ for more than a decade, Julian praises the quality of the compilation, saying the album is “a great idea, and about timeâ€.“They’ve had so many good bands through here (La Rascasse), I have played with them. But many are unsigned and this will give them an opportunity to be heard.â€Caligagan, Waste, Ozcar and Blah Blah have each recorded their own albums. But with the demand for live, original music in bars and clubs disturbingly minimal, they perform covers to keep the crowds happy and the pay cheques coming in.Nicolas Timmermans, lead singer of Waste says “We are not just covers bands. We do that because we like to play live together and sadly that’s the only way we can do that at this moment. As independent musicians we’d just like to get the chance to play the songs we write and that we love. I hope this album will open the minds of people to discover more of our original songs.â€Alan Roberts, lead vocalist in Blah Blah, agrees. “There’s so much talent out there but it’s difficult. We’ve recorded our own album and we’ve tried to take our songs out live, but we’re also covers bands, bar bands, people come to dance to songs they know, they don’t want to hear songs they don’t.â€But there is little doubt La Rascasse Monte Carlo, with eleven distinct songs, will tempt the taste buds of many, and hopefully have them searching the internet for more of the bands’ originals.
La Rascasse de Monte Carlo is available from all FNAC stores and can be purchased on the internet.Cassandra Tanti
