About Me

Yoel Terry Cabrera, was born in the city of Camagüey, Cuba on January 25th 1970. A brilliant flute player and saxophonist, Yoel graduated as a teacher and instrumentalist from "Jose White" conservatory in his town of origin (Camagüey). Today, he chooses to specialise in playing the flute and saxophone. Yoel Terry Cabrera comes from a family of musicians, and has enjoyed contact with the roots and folklore of his country since his earliest years. This contact has been mostly through his father - Don Pancho Terry, who is known and highly respected all around the world for the legacy and renewal of the playing of the Chequere, one of the most widely used instruments in Cuban folk music. Yoel Terry Cabrera is expert at making you feel comfortable and at ease with his musical performance! He is known amongst the bands and musicians he has played and plays with since he moved in Europe as a free lance musician in 1995. A mixed cultural background has given him the opportunity to appreciate and to participate in those forms of religion or living instruction where music is the main source of communication and way of life!Yoel is in his final year of studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki Finland. He plans to complete his Masters degree at the academy and focus on his musical vision and career.

Influences: In my playing you can hear or feel the presence of all those who one way or another have been next to me making me feel the good vibration of life. On the technical side I'd like to mention all the flute teachers who taught me to play the instrument. They are Jorje Alvares, Juan Bru, Ricardo Benitez Alonso and Pedro Dalmau. Also I had admired the flute playing of Orlando Beltran (my Godfather and flute player from "Maravillas de Floridas"), Richard Eguers, Oriente Lopez, Jose luis Cortes "El tosco" (NG la banda's leader), El Lele from "Los Van Van", Orlando Valles "Maraca", and many other influences outside of Cuba like Dave Valentin, Hubbert Laws, Joe Farrel, and others. Also saxophone player like Chalie Parker, Don Byas, Luky Tompson, Lester Young, Genne Amond, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon and many many others.
Sounds Like: Like me some how!
