Onur Ataman

Onur Ataman was born on 01.02.1977 in Istanbul, Turkey. He started to play the electric guitar at the age of 14. After having some private lessons, he entered the Istanbul State Conservatory in 1995. He studied classical piano and singing. In 2001 he moved to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar at the Royal Conservatory. He studied jazz guitar with Peter Nieuwerf , Wim Bronnenberg and Eef Albers, jazz piano with Eric Gieben. He attended several Big Band and contemporary music projects such as the Steve Reich Festival and the Maria Schneider project. He had the opportunity to attend workshops with some important jazz musicians such as Mike Stern, Scott Henderson, Michael Brecker and Kurt Rosenwinkel. He began to work with his own band in 2003. With the band he plays his own compositions. In 2004 he was chosen to be the new professional jazz musician and at that time he had the opportunity to play with Eef Albers. In 2005 he graduated from the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag with a degree of eight. He played at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam during the summer of 2006.After the North See Jazz Festival he played in Dutch Fretless Guitar Festival in Den Haag. He has also been accepted to study for a Masters degree at the Royal Conservatory.In 2006 he started to work with Philip Catherine. And he is also won a scholarship as a top talent student from Ducth Government. He performed in a sold out BIM huis (Amsterdam) with his band and featuring Eric Vloeimans and Jeroen van Vliet 2007 march. In the same period he join the band called Istanbul Connection. He is performing in this band his compositions and sharing the music with very impotant Dutch musicians. Such as Dick De Graaf , Pascal Vermeer, Guus Baker , Jeroen Van Vliet and Ruben Van Rompay. In june 2007 he graduated master degree in jazz guitar with a degree of 9 from Royal Conservatory in Den Haag. He will continue his education with Doctora (PHD) Program In Leiden University The Netherlands and Belgium, Gent Orpheus Institute. Also he is studying Karnatic Music ( South Indian Classical Music) with Rafael Reina in Amsterdam Conservatorium. Onur Ataman did a great tour with his band March 2008 beetwen 17-23 march in Istanbul. Sponsored by Generaal Consulaat Netherlands Istanbul. In May 2008 Onur Ataman Ensemble did the second tour to Istanbul sponsored by Corendon Fly Company. Onur Ataman played in Istanbul Jazz Center which is one of the best jazz club in Europe these days. He will be performing in Istanbul Jazz Festival with his band and famus Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimans in july 15th 2008.
