Jackie Wilson made it to the "Hall Of Fame".
Induction Year: 1987
Induction Category: Performer
They called him “Mr. Entertainment,†and indeed Jackie Wilson was a gifted singer of considerable range and an athletic showman who commanded a stage like few before or since. He was a natural tenor who sang with the graceful control of Sam Cooke and moved with the frenzied dynamism of James Brown. With all the flair and finesse at his disposal, Wilson routinely drove audiences to the brink of hysteria. A mainstay of the R&B and pop charts from 1958 to 1968, Wilson amassed two dozen Top Forty singles, all released on the Brunswick label. On record, he was often saddled with grandiose arrangements and dated material, but he transcended even the most bathetic settings with the tremulous excitement of his vocals.
The Detroit-born Wilson turned to R&B after stints as a gospel singer and amateur boxer. He joined Billy Ward and His Dominoes as lead singer in 1953, replacing Clyde McPhatter when the latter left to join the Drifters. Wilson remained with the Dominoes until 1957, singing on such high-charting numbers as “St. Therese of the Roses.†Wilson launched his solo career in 1958 with the singles “Reet Petite†and “To Be Loved,†both written for him by a pre-Motown Berry Gordy, Jr., back when the latter was a struggling songwriter. Another Gordy composition, “Lonely Teardrops,†reached ..7 on the pop chart and went to ..1 on the R&B side. Other chart-topping R&B hits followed: “You Better Know It,†“Doggin’ Around,†“A Woman, a Lover, a Friend.†Wilson’s biggest hit, the exquisitely soulful “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,†came in 1967.
In early 1974, when Lil "Johnnie Gee" met Jackie Wilson for the first
time, it was a new friendship Jackie stood by, teaching vocals, dance and showmanship to the little guy. Johnnie Gee was signed to Brunswick with the 'Step By Step' band, Jonnie Gee had became his little insperational friend.
Through it all, Wilson tore it up onstage with an act that radiated excitement and sex appeal. His popularity extended overseas, where, in 1963 he headlined a British show that had the Beatles as one of his opening acts. Though the hits stopped coming as musical tastes shifted in the late Sixties, Wilson remained active on the performing front. He was, in fact, in the midst of a 1975 show in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, when he suffered a stroke that plunged him into a coma. Wilson remained hospitalized for more than eight years until his death in 1984.
As a tribute and Birthday approaching, please keep Jackie's dream alive by spinning his friends new single "Mesmerized".

Jackie Wilson At The Copa
By: Ed Sullivan
It happened in 1957, in Detroit. Young Nat Tarnopol, 26 years old, had set himself up as a theatrical agent in a 1-room office on Woodward Street. The office was not very elaborate. It cost $12 a month, $3 a week!
On this particular afternoon, Tarnopol was awaiting an appointment with a 22-year-old singer, Jackie Wilson, who had sung the lead with ..The Dominoes.. but had dropped out of the combination to go on his own.
Tarnopol asked young Wilson to sing a song for him and Jackie sang ..Danny Boy... That was the start of a spectacular recording combination. In five years, this two-youngster team has come up with 7 Gold Records, starting with ..To Be Loved.. and proceeding through ..Lonely Teardrops,.. ..That..s Why,.. ..All My Love,.. ..Night,.. ..Doggin.. Around,.. and ..A Woman, A Lover, A Friend... I describe Tarnopol and Wilson as a team because they..re bound together by a very impressive degree of loyalty, founded on deep trust in each other. And, there is an additional quality: Tarnopol is a big-time operator. He spends money generously if there is the slightest chance that it will help Jackie Wilson..s career.
One Afternoon, former Olympic ice skating champion Joe Moore and I were riding over New York..s startling Triboro Bridge, on our way back from a round of golf. Moore turned on the car radio and that was the first time I..d ever heard the voice of Jackie Wilson. ..Who..s that sensational kid singer?.. I asked Moore. ..I want to grab him for our show right away... Moore started laughing: I had to time this just right so you..d hear this recording session today, because I knew as soon as you heard him, you..d grab him... Jackie Wilson has been a terrific hit on our show in each appearance, as you TV viewers know.
But the two Detroit youngsters had other goals in mind, and by this time, probably they..ve already locked up the date they..ve been working on for some time at Las Vegas, just a s recently Wilson won solo star billing at New York..s famed Copacabana. This Copa date about sooner than Wilson and Tarnopol expected because Copacabana operator Jules Podell long-distanced them and asked if they could move up their date and rush to New York City to fill the vacancy created by the illness of Joey Bishop. In that engagement Wilson tore down the house and after his first show, Podell signed him immediately for dates 3 years in ahead.
..Ed, that was the thrill of a lifetime.. Jackie Told me, after his opening show. ..When I walked out on that floor, so help me, I was a little bit scared. This was the floor on which Sinatra, Martin & Lewis, Jimmy Durante, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joe E. Lewis, Rosemary Clooney, Lena Horne, Tony Martin, and all of those giants of our business performed.
..I think I must have felt the way a young ball player feels when he shows up in the Yankee Stadium for the first time or steps Madison Square Garden ring for the first time or meets, head-on Arnold Palmer in a golf tournament. It took me a couple of songs to get un-tensed but from then on, I felt so happy and excited that I just sang up a storm... But I..ll guarantee that all of you who listen to this album, which Jackie Wilson recorded at the Copacabana, won..t detect any trace of ..butterflies.. in any of his vocal passages. The great ones of our business always are tense, facing each new challenge, but because they..re great, they never exhibit it. This album was made right in the Copa with a regular Copacabana audience jamming the room. Wilson..s all-time idol, Al Jolson, would have told Jackie that this was a top-flight job.
Well, all these fine things couldn..t happen to a nicer pair of youngsters than Wilson and Tarnopol. In the case of Jackie Wilson, he shares his success with a mother, sister and a father who has been able to retire from working in a Detroit factory.
Jackie attended Highland Park H.S., just outside of Detroit and I imagine that every youngster who goes to that school has been reminded by his teachers that if alumnus Jackie Wilson could become world famous, then each of them is entitled to dream his and her own dreams of success. Providing, of course, that they apply themselves as conscientiously as Jackie Wilson has practiced his career.
And if they could locate a manager as dedicated as my young friend Nat Tarnopol, that would be of considerable help, too.

Stay tuned as this film progresses towards the big screen,

FACTS ABOUT "JACKIE WILSON"
A boxing champion in the 1940s, Jackie Wilson swapped pugilism for Pop, issuing 'Danny Boy' under his fighting name Sonnay Wilson and replacing lead singer Clyde McPhatter in Billy Ward And His Dominoes in 1951. With a style of vocals to match his onstage athletics, he shone on Dominoes hits like 'Rags To Riches' (1953) and 'St. Therese Of The Roses' (1956).
After leaving the Dominoes in 1956, he hired cousin Billy Davis (alias Tyrone Carlo) and Berry Gordy as writers. Their song 'Reet Petite' (1957) was a classic: Wilson's voice soared above Gordy's Big Band brass, crashing the UK chart. In 1957, he had a US smash with 'Lonely Teardrops', the first of a chart run which included 1959's 'That's Why (I Love You So)' and 'I'll Be Satisfied', and 1960's 'Doggin' Around', '(You Were Made For) All My Love', 'A Woman, A Lover, A Friend' and 'Night'. The latter hit- a revamp of Saint-Saens' 'My Heart At Thy Sweet Voice'- was a Pop/Classical mix which inspired Elvis' 'It's Now Or Never' (1960) and continued with 'Alone At Last' (1960) and 'My Empty Arms' (1961).
After he split from Gordy, Wilson coasted through the mid-60s, save for 1963's funky 'Baby Workout'. With his producer Carl Davis, he stormed back with 1966's 'Whispers (Gettin' Louder)', and 1967's '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher'.
However, this renaissance was brief: by the mid-70s Wilson was playing the club circuit. He had a heart attack on stage at the Latin Casino, New Jersey- reportedly having just sung the line 'My heart is crying' from 'Lonely Teardrops'- and spent his final years in hospital care. A spate of UK Wilson mania in the 80s sent 'Reet Petite' to No.1 in 1986, followed by gits in 1987 (the year he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame) with '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher' and the superb 'I Get The Sweetest Feeling', his final US hit from 1968. In an unrelated tribute in 1982, Dexy's Midnight Runners had a hit with 'Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaen When You Smile)', written by Van Morrison.

THE BRUNSWICK HISTORY
NAT TARNOPOL & JACKIE WILSON
In the spring of 1956, Nat Tarnopol left his job at Union Tire in Detroit at the age of
25 to try his hand in the music business. Determined to manage and only publish R&B music,
Tarnopol began working with an older and established artist manager by the name of Al Green.
Green managed Atlantic recording artists LaVern Baker and Johnny Ray.
In addition to being a manager, Green was associated with the
Flame Show Bar, which was the main hangout for all the R&B artists in Detroit's Black Bottom section.
At around this time, a 22-year-old Jackie Wilson had just broken his contract with Billy Ward & The Dominos in hopes of starting a solo career. Green and Tarnopol agreed to manage Wilson and began recording Wilson's demos while in Detroit, with music written by two unknown songwriters by the names of Billy Davis and Berry Gordy Jr. Wilson's demos were being shopped to New York labels such as Atlantic Records, where Green had an existing relationship.
While waiting for Atlantic to make up their mind about Wilson, Decca Records A&R chief, Bob Theile, made an offer to sign Wilson to Decca. By the time the contracts were ready for signature, Green had suffered a massive heart attack and died, leaving the entire job of management to Tarnopol. Tarnopol had no formal education, but growing up in the streets of Detroit gave him a keen understanding of business and how to stand his ground. Everything else had to be either learned or invented as he went along.
Wilson's first single "Reet Petite", which was recorded at New York's Pythian Temple Studio, entered the Billboard pop chart in November of 1957. However, instead of showing up on the prestigious Decca label, the executives at Decca decided to release Wilson on their lesser-known Brunswick label.
The Brunswick trademark went all the way back to the twenties and had been passed around from Warner Brothers Records to Columbia Records and then to Decca in the 50's. Decca decided to release Wilson's recordings on Brunswick so as not to blemish the pristine image of the Decca label with the association of an R&B artist. In the late fifties, R&B records were still referred to as "Race Records."
Over the next four years, Tarnopol scored eleven Top Ten singles with Wilson, and had helped put the Brunswick trademark back on the map as an active and successful record label, while making Jackie Wilson one of the first black artists to cross over into popular music. Hits like LONELY TEARDROPS, I'LL BE SATISFIED, TO BE LOVED, YOU BETTER KNOW IT, DOGGIN' AROUND and NIGHT made Wilson one of the biggest stars of his day and a regular on American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show and even at New York's Copacabana.
