Marshall Thompson Biography
Marshall Thompson grew up on Chicago's South Side. As a child, he played his snare
drum on the corner of 47th and St. Lawrence, thus beginning a lifelong love of music.
Growing up, Thompson would try to sneak into the Regal Theater only to be thrown out.
He persisted, landing a job in 1960 as the house drummer for the Regal
Theater and even performing as backup for Gladys Knight in 1967. In 1960, he and other musicians
formed the Chi-Lites. Initially, the group's name was the
Hi-Lites. They soon achieved notoriety with half a dozen singles issued on the
local Dakar and Ja-Wes labels. Because their name conflicted with that of
another local group, they changed their name, aligning themselves with Chicago.

BRUNSWICK RECORDS RECORDING LEGEND: JOHNNIE GEE
HISTORY, is made of legends like Johnnie Gee
Soul music made it's way north, east & west via the same train routes that carried rural Black workers from
their homes in the south to the industrial north. As these "Blues people" made
their way north, the music that they brought with them fused with the sophisticated
urban sounds of jazz to create the sound first called "race music" and
then later referred to as "rhythm & blues".
As this music known as R&B began to gain acceptance among whites, it became split artificially and
became known as "rock n roll" (for whites only) and "soul" (for Blacks only).
As far as we are concerned it's ALL Classic Soul !!!
Johnnie Gee has explored the past, present and future of the music that was the "soul" of the greatest freedom
movement in the history of the United States professional music industry.
For those of you who might be wondering who is Johnnie Gee, Johnnie Gee came for the Brunswick Records
camp classics of 1976 where he became a major artist at the young age of 13.
After touring 25 years with groups like: 'The Spinner's', 'Joe Simon',
'The Chilites', 'IKE & Tina Turner', 'The O'Jay's', The Independence', 'James Brown',
'The Jackson 5', 'Aretha Franklin', 'Joe Tex', 'Bohanon', 'The Wispers', 'The Stylistics',
'Ray, Goodman & Brown' just to name a few.
The sum up a million words into one sentence, Johnnie Gee is one of the greatest Midwest Soul legends
that continues to bring great sellable music to everyone for 3 decades.
Be part of the voice and the music that put Milwaukee on the map dating back some 37 years,

The 1972 Classic Release of Johnnie Gee single at age (11)
(Time After Time) 45, on CD 1972
Sidetraxx Distributing, and Cuca Records
has decided to release on of the first recordings "Step By Step" and Johnnie Gee recorded back in the early 70's,
hear the innocent smooth vocals of Lil "Johnnie Gee" at the young age of 9, carried
this classic song, as if he was a pro from the very start. Back in 1972,
Cuca recordings was the first Wisconsin based labels to record Funk, Pop, Soul
and R&B, for Midwest talent. Johnnie Gee say's; I remember recording in Sauk City,
Wisconsin with Mr. James Kirchstein studio's, it was fun back
then when I couldn't sat still and my Mom (Elgie Gee), yelled at me to stop
running up and down these people stairs and get ready to insert
your lyrics into the song.
Johnnie Gee had a strong family background, and a Mom and Dad the pushed his career daily, to make sure
he would become something in life as he pursued his career in the Music Industry.
That's why Sidetraxx Dist., decided to release this time piece titled: "Time After Time",
and the (B) side titled: "She's Gone", these are the original Master's that
were transferred on to CD for all consumer's media players today,
no cracking, popping or noises, just clean audio.

Like many popular soul groups of the 60s and 70s, Step By Step found each other as teens, singing together
and apart in various groups in their native Milwaukee until joining together
as the Step By Step band, in the late 60s. By the time we signed with the major
Brunswick label in the late 70s, we had already been signed in two
other major deals with Platinum Records.
The Step By Step Band marriage with Brunswick bore fruit quickly, as they had their first R&B hit
in the Midwest with the hot song, "Cash Money".
While in our early Brunswick songs were typical of the Soul - Funk influenced group sound of the mid 70s,
over time the Step by Step band developed their own unique sound around the writing and
production of lead singer Johnnie Gee. An immense talent, Record
distinguished the Step By Step from other silky soul groups like the Stylistics and
Blue Magic by balancing sweet soul ballads about loneliness and
vulnerability with funky thumpers about race relations and social justice.
Step By Step moved from "soul majors" to simply superstars in 1972, as two group songs rocketed
to the top of the charts and became among the most memorable songs in the Midwest.
"I Always Wanted To Be In The Band," with its Funk opening monologue, took the pop
world by storm, only to be topped by the forlorn harmonica lead and impeccable harmonies
of the groups greatest song, "Cash Money".
In the 80's Johnnie Gee, was recording sporadically and touring unceasingly over the last two decades with other
classic soul groups such as the Stylistics and Ray, Goodman and Brown.
Johnnie Gee has re-birth That legacy of great harmonies and classic material with his new soon to be
hits "One More Time" (EP) 2005 release, and his current release "Thinline",
his music continues to influence todays pop and soul artists and still wow soul music
fans after 37 years. Their popularity and longevity has been rewarding, as i continue to
keep my music on the shelves for another decade.

Johnnie Gee's Press Releases:
Milwaukee music veteran Johnnie Gee seeks respect By Tyler Casey OMC Reporter
Published Aug. 22, 2006 at 5:06 a.m.
He's one of Milwaukee's true musical legends, and now Johnnie Gee is out for respect.
Gee, who has been playing and performing music since the age of 9 and has been recording since
the '70s, has been imparting what he's learned on aspiring musicians.
"The industry is lost. People don't understand that great music is something that
can be enjoyed by everyone," he says.
He uses his own music as an example.
"I make music that you can get married to. You can have babies to it, have parties to it and play it for church-going folks.
It's music about love, life and experience. My music has no borders."
Gee has recorded with a wide range of artists through the years. From soul groups to pop acts to modern
R&B singers to rappers, he's seen them all. And though he admires the drive of current musicians,
he's not always thrilled with what he sees. "There are no more original artists
in Milwaukee. Kids aren't learning to play music anymore,
they just recreate it."
As a solution, he supports initiatives like VH1's "Save The Music," which provides funding for music
programs in public schools, and urges kids to take music classes while in school.
He would also like to see more outreach by his alma mater, The
Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.
While he doesn't live a lavish life, Gee says he lives comfortably, with homes in Milwaukee and Cudahy.
"I live very good. Everything's paid for, I don't have any debt and I still get copyright
checks from Brunswick Records."
Brunswick Records was a haven for soul artists like The Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson and Barbara Acklin in the '60s and '70s.
It was also the first label to give a teenaged Johnnie Gee a chance when it inked
The Step By Step Band, a group consisting of Gee and some neighborhood
friends and relatives. The band released its first album "We Always Wanted To Be In The Band"
in 1976. After finding out that Brunswick was still putting Step By Step
songs on compilations, he reached a settlement with the label and was offered a distribution contract.
Now Gee runs his own Sidetraxx Records imprint. He says he controls every aspect of the music he
puts out on Sidetraxx, from the playing and producing to the marketing and packaging of albums.
This dedication is something Gee thinks is missing from younger artists,
who he says just want to get paid as quickly as possible.
"You have to put something in to get something out. This industry isn't free."
The main thing Gee always emphasizes is the need to control publishing. He says that mix tapes, which
hip-hop artists have been making and distributing for a long time, are a false path to success
in the music business.
"Those mix tapes are a waste of time because you don't own anything. You don't have to get any label
clearances (from samples or other artists making guest appearances) but there's no publishing.
Owning your publishing is the only way to truly own your music."
For now, he's got a recently released EP titled "It's A Thinline," which features new material as
well as older songs and was just released as a follow up to last year's "One More Time." What
he's most proud of after 37 years of playing music is the ability
to touch fans young and old.
"Older people remember us, and they're telling their kids,
'This is real music.'"
