To the lascivious pleasings of a lute…

About Me

I used to teach guitar privately and in schools in Essex during the 80s before joining the editorial team at Guitarist magazine in 1992. Spent my days reviewing guitars and interviewing players like Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler and many, many more. Lots of happy memories from those days!
It really was a complete daze for me - one minute I'm teaching in a small, eight foot by six foot room and playing pubs and clubs when I had the time - and the next I'm on tour with Pink Floyd, backstage with Metallica and living the life of a music journalist.
In 1995 I took over as editor of the magazine, transferring to our sister publication Guitar Techniques later on. All of a sudden I was back teaching guitar again. After a while I started writing books, including Ten Minute Guitar Workout, 100 Tips For Guitar and loads more - I think I've written around 16 so far.
One of the books I wrote was jazz guitarist Martin Taylor's official autobiography. After it was released, the publishers asked if we would do a book signing tour together across the UK. It was a great experience; we were playing together every night and I found myself remembering why I got into the music business in the first place - to play guitar. So I left the magazine and began work on an album, which Martin offered to produce for me. It meant fitting in studio sessions around my busy writing schedule but eventually 'Nocturnal' was released in the summer of 2006.
I'm still writing books, but playing and doing a bit of music journalism on the side, too...
Hey, life is good.
What people are saying about David's album, 'Nocturnal'
“David has been known as a respected teacher, writer and journalist for many years, but in many ways his great talent as a guitarist and composer has remained obscured - until now. Here at last, after four years of me badgering him, is his first solo CD.”

“Good tunes, fine playing…” Acoustic guitar maestro Gordon Giltrap
“Beautiful music!” BBC Radio
“A delight from start to finish…" Guitar Techniques magazine
“‘Nocturnal’ is an absolute must for any self-respecting acoustic music lover.” Acoustic magazine

My Interests

Music:

Influences: Oh, everything...
My record collection goes from Joni Mitchell to Peter Gabriel to Bach to loads of other stuff.
I really like jazz guitar players - Martin Taylor, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Bruno, Howard Alden, etc... I play some jazz myself, but it's always acoustic fingerstyle stuff that comes out in my compositions.
Lately I've been listening to jazz pianists: Bill Evans, Esbjorn Svensson and Tord Gustavsen, amongst other things. When I'm writing, I'll listen to ambient radio stations and that type of music has become an influence, too.
I suppose I enjoy anything that's played well and with feeling, basically!
