About Me

THINK OF US MORE AS A BAND THAN A THEATRE COMPANY . . . . PLEASE

My Interests

SPONSORED BY NOBODY is a Brooklyn theatre company dedicated to developing original work that is relevant to contemporary American culture. Founded in 2005, SPONSORED BY NOBODY has established a reputation in New York for presenting abrasive theatre committed to the idea of art as a catalyst for social change. While rooted in theatre, the company incorporates multiple disciplines – borrowing from dance, film, music, and installation art – while employing both found-texts and original writing. SPONSORED BY NOBODY remains committed to a collaborative development process and operates with a sense of urgency in the projects we undertake as a company.Since 2005, SPONSORED BY NOBODY has developed six original works of theatre -- COMPRESSION OF A CASUALTY -- FOX(y) FRIENDS -- THE POSITION -- NOT FROM CANADA -- THE AMPUTATED YEARS -- and W.M.D. ( just the low points). Our inaugural work THE POSITION received three separate productions in New York and Massachusetts during 2005. The complete text of THE POSITION was published in the annual New York anthology PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS 2006 and THE BEST MEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES 2006. SPONSORED BY NOBODY has presented work in New York at Collective Unconscious, BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, 3LD Technology Center, the Brick Theater, HERE Art Center, the Ontological-Hysteric INCUBATOR, the Chashama Theater, the Puffin Room and the 2007 New York International Fringe Festival. Works developed by SPONSORED BY NOBODY have been presented in California, New Jersey, Colorado and Canada. The company has evolved to include international artists and works with designers from a wide spectrum of disciplines.SPONSORED BY NOBODY is one of only a select few companies that have twice been invited to present new work at the annual OBIE Award-winning ICE FACTORY festival at the Ohio Theatre in New York City. Curated by Soho Think Tank, SPONSORED BY NOBODY presented THE POSITION at ICE FACTORY ’05 and W.M.D. (just the low points) at ICE FACTORY ’08. SPONSORED BY NOBODY was the recipient of a 2007 Performance Development Award from chashama and the National Endowment for the Arts to develop -- W.M.D. (just the low points).SPONSORED BY NOBODY will present the world premiere of -- W.M.D. (just the low points) -- at The Game Is Up! Festival at the Vooruit Art Center in Ghent on March 3-4, 2009; followed by a tour of art centers in Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2009, SPONSORED BY NOBODY will revive their previous acclaimed works – THE POSITION and NOT FROM CANADA – at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival; the company will also partake in an INCUBATOR residency at the Ontological-Hysteric Theater in New York to develop a new work.SPONSORED BY NOBODY plans to build upon our recent success and continue to create original work that reflects contemporary realities in our culture. Our goals are to expand our organization to assist emerging New York artists while maintaining a sense of commitment and engagement with our local community. SPONSORED BY NOBODY remains under the leadership of Artistic Director, Kevin Doyle, Founding Company Members Peter Hoerburger, Scott Miller, Paul Newport, and Sean O’Hagan; Company Member Jessa Wildemeersch (Belgium); and Director of Development, Kate Iezzoni./ Our active associates include: Laura Adams, Jonny Cigar, Chris Gentile, McKenna Kerrigan, Elizabeth Woodard, Kate Moran, Michael Crisuolo, Sam Ghosh, Macha Ross, Mare Hieronimus, Shelly Bhalla, Sarah Flanagan, Brian Distance, Brendan Regimbal, Josh Edelmann and Captain Tom./ /WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH YOUR NAME? In 1987, the recording artist Neil Young released a single -- “This Note’s For You” -- a satirical attack on the intertwining of popular music with corporate sponsorship and the inherent pretensions of advertising. The video for the single was a vivid parody of the rock-themed beer and soda commercials of the decade. The video was promptly banned by MTV Networks and the song was conveniently excluded from radio playlists throughout the country. Later that year, Neil Young went on tour in support of his banned album. The tour was entitled -- Sponsored By Nobody. We feel the name is relevant not only to the American theatre industry -- but to the lack of a real national discussion on the role of the arts in America. It is a discussion that has been on hold since the 1930s -- and is connected to other national discussions we prefer to postpone on health care and education. Its time to have them.W.M.D. ( just the low points )

I'd like to meet:

We would love to meet the following people: 1. An innovative Set Designer -- with an interest/focus more in Installation Art than your usual fourth wall hotel room design. 2. A good sound artist from the John Collins School of Sound Design -- possibly a talented gent like Ken Urban when he's not sequestered away during a semester. 3. A costume designer who knows how to keep it real. 4. Any leads on a Medieval Knight costume. The real deal, not the tacky plastic. 5. Any leads on a deserted warehouse on the Brooklyn waterfront that would prove an ideal live/work location for a blossoming theatre/production company.-----The single women in the company are always interested in meeting men who are either sculptors or welders with disposable income reserved for French restaurants -- brave, husky, fearless men who are not fazed by the super-duper high-priced handling surcharge at the St. Ann's Warehouse Box Office. The single men in the company are always interested in beautiful redheaded real estate agents and professional dancers who looking for a way out of the self-referential dance scene.

Music:

Doyle is basically into anyone signed on Merge Records -- Rough Trade Records -- Matador Records -- Drag City -- Misra Records -- Orange Twin -- Kill Rock Stars. The usual. The list goes on and on. British Sea Power. Slumber Party. The Silver Jews. The Essex Green. Doyle usually picks the pre-show & post-show music our audiences seem to respond well to (although there are rumors O'Hagan might start picking tunes). As an ensemble we are very much into right now -- OUR BROKEN GARDEN (the songs of Anna Brønsted) -- the Swedish bands IRENE, SAMBASSADEUR and HANIF (who also go by a ton of other names) -- the American bands THE SWIMMERS, THE SKY DROPS, SUNSPLIT and THE PANDAS. We may be biased, but we believe that THE STRUGGLERS -- 33hz -- and THRUSHES are poised to be break-out bands in the next year. We're convinced there is something in the drinking water in Iceland -- b/c the music coming out of there is really just too much for its own good. Right now Doyle is on a Gui Boratto kick, with some THOMOS thrown in for good measure. Paul Newport has a weakness for The Kinks. Peter Hoerburger, for some strange reason, is into rap. We remain respectfully perplexed about that one. Sean O'Hagan turned us all on to The Editors and The National. Laura Adams casts her vote for vintage Le Tigre and Doyle tends to nod in agreement. Nobody knows what kind of music Scott Miller likes -- he's been reading the same acting textbook for 2 years -- but he tends to respond we'll to Scandinavian indie pop. Kate Moran doesn't like music -- or at least that's what she claims -- although you wouldn't know she can sing a mean rendition of Michele Shocked's "Anchorage". You do not want to know what Chris Gentile's musical tastes are -- trust us. Sam Ghosh and Shelly Bhalla, for some strange reason, prefer a heavy rotation of Ravi Shankar. Vicki Thomson has an awful weakness for what we on this side of the pond refer to as Euro Trash Brit Pop. Michael Criscuolo is so too old and too far removed from the music scene that he basically listens to whatever Doyle feeds him. We are afraid to ask Ishah Janssen-Faith about her musical tastes -- but we suspect it involves the signing of Appalachian folk songs. Macha Ross has a much better taste in music than her husband, Mr. Hoerburger -- (we'd hate to be an iPod in those Pocanos car trips!). And of course, Cigar plays the banjo, but only while playing with himself.Herman Dune I Whish That I Could See You Soon (final version)
