About Me

Born and raised in Bridgeport Connecticut, Carl began formal musical studies on drums at age seven and organ at age 13, before turning to the electric bass full-time at age 14. He would continue his studies throughout high school, mastering a wide range of solo and ensemble styles, including rock, funk and jazz, with influences as far-reaching as Van Halen, George Clinton and Miles Davis.Carl then went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston as a Performance major and graduated in 1986. He has since forged a career as diverse as his musical background, performing with an eclectic group of world renown R&B, jazz and rock artists that includes Dizzy Gillespie, Spin Doctors, Maxwell, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Digable Planets, Gil Scott-Heron, Aaron Neville, Tavares, Alyson Williams, Patti Rothberg, Walter Beasley, N'Dea Davenport, Phil Perry, Chuck Loeb and Kim Waters. Other extensive gigs of note include several years as musical director for the multi-platinum Brian McKnight, and extensive tenures with Will Downing, Mica Paris and Ivan Neville. In the process, Carl has performed on concert stages around the world and appeared on numerous television shows. An accomplished composer and educator, Carl has had a longtime recording/touring affiliation with solo artist/clinician, Bobby Rock. Their CD "Out of Body," in which Carl was a prominent songwriter along with Rock and Australian guitar great, Brett Garsed, remains a critically-acclaimed favorite in instrumental rock circles. Carl also recently co-wrote and co-produced R&B singer Marlon Saunders' debut CD entitled "Enter My Mind" as well as Marlon's follow-up CD "A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions." In 2004 Carl released his debut CD entitled "This Day." Other composition credits include works for TV that have been featured on "MTV," "VH-1," "A&E," "Spike TV," "CMT," "National Geographic," "USA," "The Food Network," "The Discovery Channel," "One Life to Live," "Passions," "All My Children," and the hit Showtime program "Soul Food."In addition to his ongoing writing and recording projects, Carl is currently dividing his schedule between vocal sensation Three Mo' Tenors, contemporary jazz artist Alex Bugnon, east coast jam band Fro, and Japanese guitar sensation Jiro Yoshida, with whom he has recorded several CDs and toured Japan nearly a dozen times. He also remains an active session player in the New York area.
