Autism spectrum disorder is an umbrella term for a group of disorders that share the same behavioural characteristics. Autism spectrum disorders include, autistic disorder, Asperger disorder and pervasive developmental disorder- not otherwise specified (atypical autism). Each of these disorders is a life long neurobiological disorder. At present the cause for these disorders is thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There are many treatments for autism all with varying degrees of effectiveness depending on individual circumstances. There is no known cure for autism spectrum disorders. Children with these conditions become adults with these conditions. International research indicates that as many as 1/125 people have an autism spectrum disorder. Unfortunately the current situation at a state and federal level sees autism spectrum disorders under recognised and underfunded.
