History in a Nutshell
Blowbeat took off in the early
eighties, evolving out of the Ton Engels Band. The first Blowbeat
line-up consisted of:
Ton Engels - vocals/guitar
Cor Mutsers -
bass/vocals
Rene Creemers – drums/vocals
The band
played the Dutch club circuit of that time and made one album in that
pre-cd era: Hands Up! Songs like Will He Come From His Castle and
Let's Talk Shit from that album are still on today's
setlist. In 1986 the band members were:
Ton E - vocals/guitar
Jörg
Lehnardt - guitar/vocals
Pieter Douma - bass/vocals
Rene
Creemers – drums
This funky ensemble played numerous
gigs, extensively touring the German and Swiss club scene. All this
lasted until about 1993. In 1991 Rene Creemers left the band. (
Recently, Rene has been part of the successful virtuoso drum-duo
called The Drumbassadors ) Arthur Lijten took over the drum spot. Two
albums were released during those days. Blowbeat was released in 1989
and Chaisaw Melodies saw the light in 1992. In 1993 bass player
Pieter Douma thought it was time for a change and left the band.
Arthur Lijten also had other things on his mind. Consequently not
much happened Blowbeat-wise for the remainder of the nineties.
Occasionally a few concerts were played with varying line-ups. (on
bass people like Emma Steffens, Stu Grimshaw and Eric Coenen came and
went )
In the second half on the nineties a great deal of time
went into other musical projects. Ton Engels recorded two albums (
called Plat and Wermer As Vandaag ). The lyrics on those records are
in Ton's first language; a Dutch dialect as spoken in his
little hometown Helden in the Southeast of the Netherlands. Several
Blowbeat buddies also played on these albums. Finally… in
2002, Ton E succeeded in bringing four people together again who
where ‘ready, willing and able'.
A new quartet
that could serve that typical Blowbeat cocktail once again:
Arthur
Lijten, drums/vocals
Eric Coenen, bass/vocals
Leendert Haaksma,
guitar
Ton Engels, vocals-guitar
That was 2002.
With
everybody as busy as they were it took another four years to finally
complete a new Blowbeat album. The title: Songs From The Crazy
Planet. Released 20 October 2006.
