“This feels like the other side of winter for meâ€â€¦ And what a start to the spring.Just a year ago, Esther Alexander – writer and singer of songs about life, love, the stars and the sea – was introduced to Grammy-winning producer Kipper, of Sting fame.Esther recalls: “It was a scary day – just because everything inside me hoped that something might come of this first meeting, but it almost felt impossible to dream.â€
It was to her delight, then, that Esther and Kipper wrote their first song together on that very day – “Safe Houseâ€, which is featured on her new albumette.Rewind a little, and it soon becomes clear that Esther Alexander is no stranger to the world of music. As a session singer, she has performed and recorded with the likes of Steve Winwood, Ruby Turner and the London Community Gospel Choir. Esther also featured on the Café del Mar 25th anniversary album, co-writing and performing “Stop the World†with “Elcho†and also on the song “Snowbird†with “The Light of Aidanâ€.Growing up Esther was exposed to a variety of music: “My mum was totally into her rock ‘n’ roll, so Bill Haley and the Comets would be on full volume. She also loved Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. My dad was the classical boff – so he’d want to play Elgar and Rachmaninov. I got a bit of a mix.â€As Esther grew up her interest was fired by the likes of U2, the Carpenters, Suzanne Vega and Sheryl Crow and she began dabbling in songwriting in her teens. At eighteen she had her first song published. A few years later, having penned a few more songs, she met producer Phil Baggaley, who encouraged her to keep at it and they began to write together.“The great thing for me about co-writing is that there’s someone there to stop me from binning my ideas,†she laughs.Soon there was enough material to begin gigging and her reputation as a performer spread fast and Esther came under the wing of Freedom Management’s Martyn Barter.Fast forward to the present and Esther Alexander is preparing to launch herself on the world at large. After a spell in the studio with Kipper, her albumette showcases three studio tracks and one live recording.“I feel like I’ve been pregnant with some of these songs for a while and so it is totally amazing to finally have my baby record done. The journey so far has been a rollercoaster ride and I’m very excited to see where it’s going to take me next.â€Bring on the summer....
