Jodie Jones is a young singer-songwriter from Devon, in the UK. At just twenty two years old, she is unsigned and self-managed, yet has some impressive gigs under her belt, having supported some great artists including Van Morrison, Roy Wood, Supergrass, DJ Yoda and Midge Ure. Her song Its Like Love was also one of the BBC Talent Showcase Top Ten Winners in early 2006.
"I've always had music and ideas bubbling away inside me - at my secondary school, being in the countryside, my creativity was really encouraged and nurtured, which was great. During my time at school I found a spare room with a piano that I would write songs in during the lunch breaks, and ended up having my friends come along and listen. I then went on to study performing arts at college, and found another room with a piano to write in, and again found my classmates gathering around listening and singing along. My time was taken up with another subject full-time, though, so I found myself writing songs late into the night after college. I found that songwriting is an addictive thing, and ideas pester me wherever I go. In early 2003, when a feeling had been nagging at me that this was what I was made to do, I left my college course to pursue a career in singing and songwriting"
Jodie then took time to nurture her creativity and to become a professional performer and songwriter. At first, she would sit down at the piano and write from 9 til 5 until eventually songwriting was a natural thing she could do and enjoy whatever the setting, or time-pressure. Her parents were already published songwriters, and instantly loved her songwriting and became one of her major support-systems.
As Jodie grew up in such a musical family, with both parents being singers and songwriters, it only felt natural to express herself through music. She also listened to a wide range of music as a child, making her own music quite eclectic. Influences include Suzanne Vega, Vanessa Carlton, Shawn Colvin and Alanis Morissette, though Jodie had always been sure about the need for her songs to be an original, honest outlet of her true feelings, rather than an imitation of whats already around.
By watching Jodie working, its so easy to see that she loves every part of her job - the writing, performing, chatting to the audience, being interviewed, all of it! What many refer to as a natural, Jodie beams on stage, whether in front of two-and-a-half-thousand (supporting Van Morrison) or an intimate, local venue, and her voice instantly wins over the audience.
The debut album, All Dressed Up, was a home recording, and launched in the South West in May 2005, but since then things have changed mostly due to meeting her husband, Joff Alexander-Frye, and starting to write new songs about him and perform with him. More recordings with Joff are definitely on the way, as his vocals and guitar give the music another depth, and a new dynamic. But whats next for Jodie?
"I wish I could tell you! But then again, I dont. The fun of it is not knowing where youre going next sometimes things are crazy busy and really taking off, and other times theres more space, and thats when I end up getting to write new songs. Its a crazy job because there is no guarentee - a qualification doesnt help and there will never be a monthly salary - but I love it and Ill keep at it as long as I love writing songs and sharing them with people"
