About Me

Chicago rock band OVERHANG came together in 2006 when Jeff Stienstra (drums) and Nate Bierdeman (bass) agreed to help founding members Joel Zuidhof (lead guitar) and Grant Elgersma (vocals and guitar) complete their debut album “Another Hole for You to Crawl Into”. The album had been in the works for several years, going back to 2004 when the band’s original line-up played Cornerstone Music Festival’s main stage as New Band Contest winners. When the original unit decided to part ways just a few months later, the album’s completion had to be postponed.

With the help of OVERHANG’s new members, “Another Hole For You to Crawl Into” was officially released in November, 2007. All but one of the tracks were mixed in Copenhagen, Denmark by long-time friend Janis Kalnins who preserved the raw emotion of the band’s performances while expanding the album’s sonic landscape. Bassist Nate Bierdeman mixed the remaining track and the entire album was mastered by Trevor Sadler of Mastermind Studios in Milwaukee, WI. The album has already turned some heads in Chicago. “Another Hole for You to Crawl Into” was featured on the popular “Best of 2007” show on community radio station WLUW and also on one of iTunes’ most listened-to podcasts, “The Bored-Again Christian”.

To support the album OVERHANG brought their inspiring live show to a variety of venues ranging from college campuses to church events to bars and clubs last Fall. From Toronto to Grand Rapids, Nashville, Madison, and Chicago, the band’s music was well-received by fans of alternative rock and indie music as well as by seasoned listeners of classic rock who find in OVERHANG the grand ambition and unabashed conviction of past rock heroes.

The name OVERHANG came about when Joel and Grant were trying to explain the feeling of their music to friends. “We both kept talking about this urge or longing for something beyond ourselves that we feel in the music,” explains Grant. “No matter what mood or emotion we’re trying to express—sorrow, joy, rage—it always comes off like a reaching for something greater or a sense that something truly transcendent is on its way. OVERHANG became a name for this grand something that we’re trying to reach, the invisible standard that we are always trying to live up to. Maybe we never quite reach the transcendent moment in this lifetime, but we believe it’s the attempt that makes music beautiful.”

"Overhang produces some incredibly well sculpted and innovative music. This is some of the best rock and roll to come out of Chicago." WLUW 88.7 DJ McLean
"With songs that keep you guessing as to where they'll go next, Overhang is a refreshing reminder that old can sound new." James Wetz, HM Magazine
"Each song on the album is packed with energy. Whether it’s the quiet intensity of 'Before I Go' or the driving, noisy, building cry of 'Buried in the Earth,' or the knock-you-backward-reeling feel of 'Disaster,' Overhang is what would be going through your head if you were running from a stampede of elephants in Africa or crawling through the desert looking for a drop of water."
