About Me

I preach New Religion. Say "Amen" somebody. Get it at www.fiskum.com.I write songs for people who can't write songs for themselves. I write songs for people who live on the unfortunate side of an imaginery line that separates them from the rest of the world. I write for the rebel, the outcast, and those who refuse to be defeated. I write music for the dance of the undefeated, and I preach New Religion.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.fiskum.com
Band Members: Musicians who recorded with Fiskum on Darkness / Fire / Dancing include Slim Dunlap of the Replacements, Tina Schlieske of Tina and the B Sides, Annie Holoien of the Soviettes, Patrik Tanner of The Far Away Men, Michael Blue of the Dweebs, and Simon Husbands of Blue Train and Galactic Symposium. Other performers include Ali Gray, Emma Jane Richards, Helmi Harrington, Nick Robinson, and John McKone. The live version of the band includes some combination of the players on Darkness.
Influences: Quite a few. The lyrical content is extremely important to my music. My lyrics are heavily influenced by my love for the Japanese writers Kawabata and Mishima. Also, I am influenced by the Scandanavian writers Hamsun and Lagerquist. My style of musical composition owes a lot to Chopin. My bass lines are an integral part of the "meaning" of the music, and I often use phrases of uneven length.I often say that if you could "see" my music, it would look like Zen ink brush painting. When recording, I choose my timbres and sonic textures carefully. I don't compose grand opera, but instead I try to capture a moment that defines the character I am writing about and show the nature of the challenge that is to come.Having said that, I'm heavily indebted to the four great songwriters of the last fifty years: Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan. I'm not saying that I'm as good as these guys, but I listen to them a lot and I'm sure that comes through in my music.I also like the Gourds, Morah, and Rachel Yamagata.
Sounds Like: I don't think I sound like anyone else. There are traces of the Replacements, Neil Young, and Springsteen. But the songs I write are fundamentally different than just about anything else out there.
