First of all, I am not a "DJ", it's my name, haha!
As early as I can remember, music has been a big part of my life. Piano lessons gave me some knowledge of music when I was a kid. I also used to sit on my sofa and pluck the strings of my father’s guitar. This turned into a serious pursuit in 1992, when I started taking guitar lessons. I then began to write my own songs. It took about 6 years before my songwriting finally started to evolve from immature puppy-love poems to structured music and lyrics that had real meaning.
In January of 2000, during an open-mic night at the Neutral Ground Coffeehouse in New Orleans, I debuted three of my songs to a small audience made up of friends, family and other customers. It was a moment that changed my life. Performing my music allowed me to open up to my family and friends in a way I never could before. Afterwards, people I had never met came up to me and told me how much they could relate to what I was singing about.
I’ve since performed in many places around the city of New Orleans including PJ’s Coffee & Tea, Carrollton Station, and the Howlin’ Wolf. Each time, my audience seems to grow a little more. For now when I play live it’s just my guitar and myself. I don’t have a band, a soundman, or even lighting. On my recordings, I play all instruments including guitar, bass, piano, and drums.
