Miles Davis once said that 'it takes a long time to sound like yourself.' The members of Project ULTRA understand this profound statement very well. They have dedicated the last two years of their lives to creating a unique sound. Project ULTRA's music can be described as groove-based rock with the lyrical prose and honesty of a singer-songwriter. Imagine Radiohead and Kings of Leon crossed with Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams. However you define it, Project ULTRA has found a home in the Chicago music scene. The band began when singer/pianist/guitarist Rich Thies and lead guitarist Nick Ross met at a local studio in 2007. There was an instant, though unlikely connection between their styles. Somehow a singer and songwriter whose musical career had been single-handedly forced by Bob Dylan found common ground with a guitarist bred on Soundgarden. Thies' intricate vocal and piano melodies melded with Ross' percussive guitar rhythms and the duo instantly realized that they were on to something. The sound the two initiated would be little without the additions of Michael Spiropoulos on bass and Bryce Dudka on drums. Michael's bass lines are without question the glue that holds the group together while Bryce’s jazz background has given the band its treasured groove.Project ULTRA made their presence felt with their initial EP release Algorithm in 2007. In the months that have followed the band unleashed their energetic sets at legendary Chicago area venues such as the Double Door, Subterranean, the Abbey and Martyr's Live. Sharing the stage with local acts and international headliners alike, they have developed a sound and presence worthy of the city they come from: diverse, upbeat and most of all, genuine. As result of their hard work, the group has been featured in the Chicago Tribune’s RedEye publication and has been played on multiple local radio stations.Project ULTRA is extremely committed to their craft. They strive to bring original and meaningful music to a generation that is overwhelmed by generic pop stars. The band is planning to release its first full-length album in 2009 and it is certain to impress.
