Umberto Eco (born January 5, 1932) is an Italian medievalist, semiotician, philosopher and novelist, best known for his novel The Name of the Rose (1980) and his many essays. Other popular Eco novels include Foucault's Pendulum (1988), The Island of the Day Before (1994), Baudolino (2000), and the Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana (2004).
