Eternal Rest Part 3From the FREETIMES, thanX~
Horrors! Independent Film Festival
Nickelodeon Theatre: Friday, Oct. 31 2003
(7 and 9:30 p.m.)The Nickelodeon Theatre presents Horrors!, Columbia’s first Halloween independent film festival. Much of the beloved cult horror classics were thrown together with shoestring budgets, so this should be an evening that appeals to those who scoff at the Hollywood sheen of today’s tepid frighteners.Leading the evening off will be Eternal Rest by Kian Black and Delorme Arant. Shot in Lexington SC, the 30-minute film opens outside the Lexington County Detention Center and ends in a Confederate cemetery off Highway 1, with the Lexington Courthouse Crier starring in a major supporting role. For the film, Arant invented the folktale of “Meamaw’s Ring,†which tells the story of a widow who hangs herself upon learning that her husband and three sons have been killed in the Civil War. Almost 100 years later, two young men set out to find the ring she was buried with.Ranunculus is a six-minute short by Wendy Brinker and Jonathan Robinson based on an urban legend about a woman hiker. As with most urban legends, Brinker heard the story from a friend who says they heard it from a friend who knew the person it had happened to. The story begins in Five Points, adding some local flare.Ashlon Langley and Stuart Grinton present Depravity, a seven-minute film about “the heightened experience of man’s communion with the darkest recesses of the mind.†The filmmakers are recent and current film students at USC.The evening closes with the nationally distributed cult classic Hell’s Highway: The True Story of Highway Traffic Films by Bret Wood. This ..ary takes a look into the films that used real crash site footage to scare generations of high school students and features graphic footage. Wood traveled to Mansfield, Ohio, to interview Earle Deems and John Domer, who, in the ‘50s and ‘60s, made driver’s education movies like Wheels of Tragedy and Mechanized Death for the Highway Safety Foundation. The Nick is located at 937 Main St., and tickets are $6.50 for general audiences, $5.50 for students or seniors and $4.50 for the Creative Film Society members. Call 254-8234 or 254-3433 for more information. Be advised that space is limited, so you might want to get there early. — Kevin Foster LangstonAnd alsoLife is Good
