About Me

LOHADA's operations started in July 1998 when Happiness Wambura, a Tanzanian mother of five and pastor's wife, wanted to do something to help her community. Underneath a large tree in a park in the center of Arusha town, Happiness gathered the children of disabled parents and took care of them, playing and singing while their parents begged in the streets for money to feed themFrom this beginning, LOHADA grew and grew. In 1999, LOHADA began another project in the rural region of Shinyanga. This project serves marginalized and destitute elderly people who have been chased from their homes after being accused of witchcraft. The organization was officially registered in October 2000 and began a paying volunteer program in 2001. Through donations from outside sources, LOHADA moved its childcare operations into a row of rented rooms, then a rented house, until 2004, when the organization was able to build the school building where the children live today. In 2005, LOHADA began its newest project; a day school for disadvantaged children.Along the way, with the help of volunteers and other partners, LOHADA developed its institutional structure and refined its goals. Today LOHADA has a strong foundation to expand and improve the services it provides to people in need, so that one day we will see our vision realized - a decent life for all Tanzanians.
