I started out with nothing - and still have most of it left...

I've been a guitarist for about 40 years. I bought my first guitar when I was 16 and learned fingerpicking pretty soon afterwards. I went through my teens fed by a diet of Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Michael Chapman, Mike Cooper, Paul Simon, Jorma Kaukonen, Stefan Grossman and myriads of other guitarists - as well as Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young et al.

In recent years I've been songwriting quite a lot; I have a wide span of musical interests to feed my inspiration. I like to avoid the stereotypical song themes; some of my songs may have a political and/or a biblical flavour. Some of them are nothing more than rants. Feeling strongly about things gives my songwriting an impetus - no moons and Junes here..

I'm a picker: I have a morbid fear of dropping a plectrum (there must be a name for it ending in ..phobia), so I don't use one. A broken fingernail is thereore a minor catastrophe.

Guitars

I have a Supro steel resonator guitar (an Ozark by any other name), which I've had since 2000. You can hear that in 'Days Of Grace'. It's a delight to play, but it weighs a ton! I also own a Yamaha FG-140 which I bought as a student in 1970 (the guitar - unlike its owner - has improved with age). I also have a Squier Strat, which has been the guitar from where most of my songs have first emerged. This appears in the background of 'Crawlin' Blues.' I also have a Norman B18CW electro-acoustic which appears in the aforementioned.

If you'd like to contact me outside of Myspace, click on my email address below - [email protected] - I'd welcome feedback and it would be great to hear from you.

..I'm only in it for the music..

Band Members:

Ain't no band, but on the songs on this site I've been ably assisted by my brother Simon Faulks, who recorded the songs, played mandolin and banjo and sang one of the harmonies in 'Politicians', and Helen Rose, who adds to the vocals on 'Days of Grace.' Simon provided bass, percussion, backing vocals and the slide guitar solo on 'Apocalyptic Pop.' He also played bass on 'Git Down.' :

Influences:

In no particular order: Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Ralph McTell, Steve Tilston, Michael Chapman, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, Tom Waits, Roy Harper, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Eric Bibb, Ben Harper, JB Lenoir, John Lee Hooker, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash & Neil Young, Ry Cooder, Grateful Dead, Robert Hunter, Phish, Steely Dan, Warren Zevon, Elliot Smith, Rory Gallagher, Mark Knopfler, Crash Test Dummies, Sufjan Stevens, REM, and it the realm of journalism - John Pilger, politics - Hugo Chavez and - last, but not least - Zippy the Pinhead, whose take on modern life and culture should imho inform all singer/songwriters.:

Git Down

'Git Down' was recorded on 28th June 2007. It's about power and degeneracy, which - believe it or not - aren't mutually exclusive. My brother Simon added a beautifully slinky bass, and the percus...

Apocalyptic Pop

'Apocalyptic Pop' was conceived and written over a period of several weeks in March 2006. The idea started when the phrase 'Apocalyptic Pop' just popped into my head, and it fed me with some wonderful...

Who I am not..

A cursory glance through a Google search on my name will reveal that there are quite a few people who share the same name as myself. Just for the record, I'd like to make it know that I am not:The scu...

These songs

Days of GraceI wrote this at the beginning of 2004; it was a long time in the pot. The run in E is a simple one, and I still like it - even 2 years after composing it. It was recorded with the st...

The Current Soundtrack

I was impressed to see the mighty Springsteen in concert on the TV some weeks ago, banging out the old Seeger songs - which are basically traditional American folk tunes, gospel, spirituals and the so...
