With the release of their debut EP “Innocence Isn’t Easyâ€, Scarlet Oaks unveil five well-crafted songs that cover genera such as folk, soul, garage, indie and classic country. From the up tempo shuffle of “Saint Anne Street Blues†which pays homage as much to Gene Autry as it does to X, to the Motown inspired “Reckless Stars†which contemplates the blossoming of love while drinking bourbon in a Detroit parking lot, “Innocence Isn’t Easy†explores the despair, miscommunication and hopes that arise between two people. With lush three part harmonies over raw vocals and simple yet melodic instrumentation, Scarlet Oaks want to make you dance, cry and throw back a few in a Detroit parking lot.
Scarlet Oaks played their first show in January of 2007, but their roots together go back much further. Founding members Steve McCauley and Noelle Christine Lothamer met several years ago at a pig roast outside of Lansing, where Steve’s half vegan honky-tonk band was playing. After the set, the two struck up a conversation about music and became good friends. Over the next few years both played in various projects and gigged together around Detroit. In need of a drummer and a new beginning, Steve called on his friend Noelle to lend a hand. That project became Scarlet Oaks.
With new beginnings come new opportunities and challenges. Both musicians had come from “rock and roll†backgrounds, but Noelle had never played with someone who had such a strong folk and country influence on their song writing. Likewise, Steve had never played with someone who had such a pension for vocals and harmonies. By combining each of their talents and shortcomings, along with there love of classic American music, the two forged the sound that defines Scarlet Oaks. With the addition of Ian Williamson on bass and their newest member Michael Munerantz on guitar, mandolin and backing vocals, the line up was complete.
Following the release of “Innocence Isn’t Easyâ€, Scarlet Oaks plan to hit the road and hit the studio to work on their followup full length record. For more information on the band, check out: www.scarletoaksmusic.com or myspace.com/scarletoaks real editor best profile tools
