About Me
Punch Brothers "Punch" is out on Nonesuch Records. We couldn’t be happier to be working with Nonesuch, some of my favorite artists are now label-mates. Emmylou Harris, Bill Frisell, Wilco, Brad Mehldau- the list goes on and on.I know most people have no idea who the heck I am, so in brief, I play bass with Punch Brothers feat. Chris Thile. I sometimes have the pleasure of playing with Ron Miles, a wonderful trumpet player and person (check him out on his own AMAZING records, and several of Bill Frisell’s records). I used to play electric bass with a band called Leftover Salmon for about 4 years- I still play with them whenever a reunion gig calls. I have a degree from University of Illinois, and another from University of Northern Colorado. I’ve been lucky enough to have some great teachers along the way: Nick Schneider, Rob Amster, Glenn Dewey, John Fremgen, Michael Arnopol, Jim Vaughn, and Art Lande. Anyway, that’s me in a nutshell. I’ve also played a bunch with Matt Flinner, and Ross Martin, who are several many nices. Some people seem to be curious about Igor, my trusty bass. It’s an unlabeled most likely German carved bass from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s (David Gage’s best guess)- the purfling on the back makes me think it might be a Pfretzner from around that time. I bought Igor from Michael Arnopol, a wonderful bassist from Chicago (check him out with Patricia Barber) in 1997. It was really ugly then, yellow with a poorly sprayed on sunburst. I had Bob Ross (great Denver bass luthier) do a bunch of work on Igor and refinish him about 2 years ago, and he looks and sounds better than ever. Pretty dark sound, and very even. And surprisingly loud. I use an Oliv "g", and Spirocore Mittels on the other 3 strings (although I’ve been messing around with some Dominants lately). I never have to use a pickup with Punch Brothers, which is f$%&ing great. I just use a little condenser called an ATM 35 (Audio Technica used to make them, I think they’re discontinued now).Anyway, that’s more than you wanted to know, I’m sure. Bye.
