Freedom Train - The Langston Hughes Project

About Me

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: I'm working on a project concerning the poems of Langston Hughes.
This all started 5 years ago when I was asked to participate in a Slam event in Toulouse. For the show I wanted to show the exisitence of black poems well before the arrival of Gil Scott Heron and The Last Poets.
Over the years I keep finding more poems. To help me remember them I turn them into songs and they've been accumulating like dust under the bed.
This is my spring clean and I now have about 30 songs incorporating almost 50 poems. Something must be done.

As Malcolm X wrote ;I tell sincere white people, “Work in conjunction with us - each of us working among our own kind.” Let sincere white individuals find all other white people they can who feel as they do - and let them form their own all - white groups, to work trying to convert other white people who are thinking and acting so racist. Let sincere whites go and teach non-violence to white people!

So far the demos you hear have all been played by myself, as a sort of virtual band.
Live, I'm lucky to have Agnès Doherty (http://www.cric-crac.net)my wife on the doublebass and Thomas Fiancette (http://www.myspace.com/thomasfiancette) on drums. Whilst we play Bouba and Jahco from Animaçao (http://www.numericircus.net/mario.htm)throw light and movement on the poems. The YouTube videos let you have an idea of the show we do.
