When the iron bird flies, and horses run on wheels, the Tibetan people will be scattered like ants across the world, and the Dharma will come to the land of the red-faced people.

------ A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin and asked: "Is there really a paradise and a hell?" "Who are you?" inquired Hakuin. "I am a samurai", the warrior replied. "You, a soldier!" sneered Hakuin, "What kind of ruler would have you as his guard? You look like a beggar". Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword. Hakuin continued: "So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably to dull to cut off my head." Nobushige drew his sword. Hakuin remarked: "Here open the gates of hell!" At these words the samurai, perceiving the master's discipline, put away his sword and bowed. "Here open the gates of paradise", said Hakuin. ----From 'Zen flesh, Zen bones'
My daughters and my wife. The little girl saw her first troop parade and asked, “What are those?â€â€œSoldiers.â€â€œWhat are soldiers?â€â€œThey are for war. They fight and each tries to kill as many of the other side as he can.â€The girl held still and studied.“Do you know…I know something?â€â€œYes, what is it you know?â€â€œSometime they’ll give a war and nobody will come.†-Carl Sandburg "May I become at all times, both now and forever A protector for those without protection A guide for those have lost their way A ship for those with oceans to cross A bridge for those with rivers to cross A sanctuary for those in danger A lamp for those without light A place of refuge for those who lack shelter And a servant to all in need."----His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama It is said that once a man of arms undertook a long journey to see a follower of Buddha, and asked if the message of Buddha could be taught to him. The answer was: "Do not what is evil. Do what is good. Keep your mind pure. 'This is the teaching of the Buddha'. 'Is this all?, said the man of arms;"Every child of five knows this.' 'It may be so, but few men of eighty can practice it', he was told. Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. -Joseph Campbell
