About Me

Hi, I'm Gary from Wauwatosa Wisconsin USA. Wauwatosa is in the County of Milwaukee. I've been an artist since 1993. Welding has been my occupation since 1973 when I went to school for it in the US Navy. During my time on board a US Navy repair ship I also worked in the carpenter shop for a year and did 3 months in the canvas shop sewing on industrial sewing machines. All the rest of the time was doing metal fabrication and welding on destroyers. As a civilian I've mostly worked in factories welding. But I did work in a ship yard, meat packing plant, and welded construction. I've been with present factory job for almost 29 years. Alot of that time was lay-offs and time spent injured on the job. Like I am right now. I've worked in this factories carpenter shop for more then a year. And I did sewing on the side. During a lay-off from the factory I worked at a canvas shop and learned to make custom boat covers. All my work experience I think lead me to sculpting. Fabricating things from wood, metal, and canvas gave me skills for sculpting. I can judge sizes well. You know deminsions. It was an accident that I starting sculpting. And one thing lead to another and now I have a commercial building right next to our home where I do my sculpting. I never went to art school. I never had more then a passing interest in art either. But here I am, showing art in galleries, art shows, the Discovery Channel, and I even did big at flea markets. Watch for me at the Pasedena flea market some day....I hope. I know some people are kind of shocked I never went to art school. I'm not sorry I about not going to school either. Some people look down on me as an artist because of that. I'm self-taught and pure. My art is raw using only my intuition to guide me. There was no early influence except I was laid-off and needed to make money. Now I'm hooked on creating. You just can't drop it once you start. I'm looking for a new Chicago Gallery to represent me right now. The one I'd been in closed this year. I miss it and the income from it. Searching for a new one is like a person with tender feet. It's hard to find a good fitting shoe. I need to find a good fitting gallery for my work. Right now any gallery that has clients who you think would like my art feel free to contact me regarding sales. I'm in the mood to make deals right now. Here in Wauwatosa I have many sculptures in my studio, out-doors around the studio, as well as around our home. Wauwatosa means Fire Fly in the native american language of the Menominee indian's. A fire fly is a flying insect who's tail lights up to attract mates. Lucky people don't do that. It could be embarassing. Like, oh don't paying any attention to my ass it's broken. Or, my ass is burnt out. Or, my ass is on the blink. Or the off switch is broken. Get it? If you don't maybe you should get one? Well any who I'm a welder, that's an artist, and so I do welded sculptures. And don't forget to check out my video of semi conductor emissary here in my profile. Thanks for stoping by and being a friend. Gary

My Interests

Wow interests. That's a huge list. There's alot of things like hiking and camping we used to do before I started making art. But I guess we still have a great interest in the wild out doors. I read and watch Sci Fi, alot. I'm interested in Science, and learning. I learn alot from listening to Public Radio. I think the US and State goverments should keep there controlling fingers out of public radio and TV. I really like doing my art. When I finnish a sculpture I'm happy so I can go on to another and if it's something new I'm really excited. I always like it when I think up somethingtotally different from what I'd done before. I've spent alot of time locally trying to stop the air pollution from a local foundry. We have 2 dogs, Chet and Katie. We usually have 3 at a time. But life is what it is.

I'd like to meet:

Hi as an artist I'm looking for connections to galleries accross the country. As well as art dealers, agents, collectors, other artists, anyone with clean scrap to make my sculptures from. My wife and I are interested in visiting California this year. So there's alot of ground between Milwaukee and California so if anyone is interested in my art speak up now and maybe we can make a detour on the way there.

Music:

I listen to alot of radio. Music programs on the public stations, as well as a local college station WMSE. Also www.wmse.org It has to be the best station in the country. Every on air person playing they'er favorite kind of music is a fanatic. They play the most original music, the best stuff out there. No Commercial crap. Which kinds? Everything that's new and hip to old time country western. Old blues, Hendrix, Zappa, to the newest plus local stuff too.

Movies:

I like half of all movies I think. With a 20% margin of error.

Television:

Yes

Books:

I mostly read Sci Fi that has space flight going on, and real science thrown in. Larry Niven Jerry Pournelle, and their co authers. Michael Crichton and Jurasic Park. I read Prey too. I might be an artist because of Jurasic Park. It's all his fault. Doug Adams he was a funny guy and enjoyed his books. All of Dune, all of them and keep waiting for more.

Heroes:

People who stand up for what is right. People who fight for right even though they are singled out. People are cowards when they do things just because others are doing it. They are affraid to be different. Don't rock the boat. Hide your head in the sand cowards. Heroes can be people who do right. Making a sacrifice doesn't mean you are doing the right thing making you a hero. We need heroes in public office who step forward and tell us the truth. Like people at OSHA, the EPA, and so on. We need folks in public office who are there for everyones good.

Coboteer Chapter 2

What's in the Schoonmaker Reef?

The ground still vibrates even though the West Metalics factory next door closed two years ago.  Some say it's the trains going by two blocks away.  But now, now I know different. We live in...
