About Me

Welcome! Thanks for stopping by...

For what it's worth, this website is a bit of everything - my family, interests, music, friends and a screened sampling of my artwork on the slide show below. Hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I enjoy creating it! Of course, my artwork is copyrighted, and should be reproduced only with permission. Thanks!
My work is a diverse collection of mixed media that often appears to be sculpted as well as rendered. I often incorporate the same bold, colorful textures that I use in my paintings into their framework, creating completely finished pieces. The work includes expressive abstracts, vibrant landscapes, seascapes, paintings of fanciful fish, as well as striking female nudes, all rendered with a unique kind of “animated realism”.
I'm a native of Amherst, New York, who studied at the Buffalo State College, the College of Liberal Arts State University of New York at Buffalo, and at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Berlin, Germany. My work has been influenced and inspired by many artists - some of whom, both modern and contemporary may be found in the "friend's section" on this site. I should also mention Andy Worhol, Andrew Wyeth, and locals Chuck Hamilton and Grant Nelson, owners of A.T. Hun Art Gallery, as well as fellow gallery artist, Albert Seidl...
Individual pieces may be seen in Savannah at The A.T. HUN ART GALLERY and at STUDIO FNU-109 upstairs at City Market; also in Statesboro, GA. at GALLERY 33 WEST; and on Tybee Island at THE IRENE SULLIVAN GALLERY... For general information and sales, contact the galleries...
You may contact me directly at [email protected] to locate specific pieces available for sale through the above listed galleries, or to inquire about privately commissioned artwork.
OUTSIDE COMMISSIONS ARE WELCOME!

My Interests

I'm an artist. I recently rediscovered that fact after moving to the Savannah area. Now I spend seven days at week in a studio doing what I love best...

Another one of my lifelong passions is sailing. When I was a boy my family spent summers on the shores of Lake Erie at a village called Van Buren in western New York. Before 2001, my wife, the kids and I lived in Silver Lake, Ohio, and sailed with the Highlander Club up at Whiskey Island on the west side of Cleveland...

As members of a band called "Work in Progress" (1996 - 2001), we sometimes played gigs at the marina's bar and grill during the summer months. I kept the vintage (1968) highlander, and still sail her, but now we spend much of our time in the deckboat instead...

I still sing and play blues harp, too, and enjoy sitting in with the locals. The original members of Work in Progress had a reunion of sorts back in the spring of 2004, and some of these photos were taken at the gigs we played that week. Other photos of my friend Charlie Sherrill and I were taken during the final week of his gig at Doc's Bar...

These past six years, some of our old friends pay us yearly visits. ("JT" tries to make it down at least once a year - twice now for the Pirate Festival.) I've made new friends, some of whom are also artists and musicians...

A. T. Hun, my "home" Gallery is very much the place to go for edgy art and cool personalities. There's a wealth of good energy, creativity and activity there (Visit our website at www.athun.com). I also have work at Tybee's Irene Sullivan Gallery, and at Gallery 33 West in Statesboro, and I'm again investigating placement of artwork in Beaufort County, SC. Thanks, to all who've encouraged the artistic reawakening - it's been a lifesaver for me!

I'd like to meet:

Artists and musicians who are skilled, focused and productive - anyone who's an art or music lover!

Music:

I'm a Dylan fan from way back, and in my opinion, some of the stuff he's doing now is the best yet. Two summers ago, when friends and I attended an outdoor concert at the ball park in Savannah - he looked like he was having the time of his life - even in the rain - and his band was remarkable. Check out the new cd!

My all-time favorite group is The Band, I think Townes Van Zandt's songwriting is amazing, and enjoy Bruce Cockburn's mystic musical imagery. I'm a fan of R&B, Americana, Indie, Bluegrass, Rock, Jazz, Soul and Funky stuff, Zydeco, Reggae, Celtic music, as well as Traditional Jazz and Delta Blues.

We used to call our stuff "folk & roll" - something akin to Folk Rock, but far more eclectic. In fact, we played just about anything we could pull off - originals, and covers of such groups as The Grateful Dead, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Dire Straits, The Wass Brothers, and Procol Harum, as well as music by a wide range of artists from Dylan, Cockburn, and Van Zandt, to John Prine, Mark Knopfler, Warren Zevon, Tom Waits, Peter Rowan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Eric Anderson, John Stewart and Cheryl Wheeler.

I've personally been inspired by the lives and great talents of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Duane Allman, Muddy Waters, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy, Garth Hudson, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, Ray Charles, Buddy Hollie, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. I'm a long-time fan of Joni Mitchell and Emmie Lou Harris. I also like Randy Newman, David Wilcox, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, J.J. Cale, Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, Jessie Winchester, and Lyle Lovett to name a few. Many of my dear friends are accomplished performers whose music I fondly admire. I miss playing with them...
