I first heard the term "Tidewriter" several years ago when I discovered Greg Boyd's publication the "Nambuli Papers." This unique work is composed of a multimedia bound set of two books, a DVD, and a board game with a reproduction of Toulouse-Lautrec's Nambuli at the Oiseau Libre on the cover. It's a fictional story connected to a surrealist board game (entitled "Don't Hate the Game!") about a turn-of-the century magician Aristide Nambuli and his circus clown twin brother. It includes a collection of poetry by one of the original Tide Writers (Bertrand Hébert), and a documentary film "Tidewriters: The Lost Reel" with rare footage originally shot in 1957 and misplaced for forty-five years, now included as a director's cut with audio commentary recorded during a 1995 screening. The film chronicles international artists and philosophers associated with the Tide Writers movement. Greg Boyd who lives in Chico, CA published the work in 2004 (Leaping Dog Press). Of course, what the concept of tidewriting has conjured in me fifty years later is more my own fascination over life's "transcendence" than any idealized artistic genre. The whole idea that living is a process - always changing, always evolving requires a commitment to learn from the past, and do the best in the moment, and not put things off or worry too much over outcomes - like writing in the sand between tides - you do what you can while you can.
MY PHILOSOPHY:
"WHATEVER WORKS!"
Everything's temporary, here, so use your imagination - improvise! Be it the will of God, the human will, natural law or superglue - whatever holds the essence of living together long enough to get the job done - I'm for it!
WHO I'D LIKE TO MEET:
Creative people who are willing to share. The most wonderful thing about creativity is that it's contagious, and easily transmitted from one soul to another. All it takes is one spark of inspiration to set a heart on fire. For me, that's what it's all about - finding inspiration and learning how to share it.
