I have gradually been extended westward. My original historical terminus, was in Illinois. Prior to the early 1990s, I terminated at the East St. Louis interchange with Interstates 55 and 70. Through the 1990s, my western endpoint was moved to Interstate 270 in the western suburbs along the U.S. 40 freeway, and was located at the approach to the U.S. 40-61 bridge over the Missouri River until 2003. I was extended first to Interstate 270, again to the Missouri River Bridge, then to the Missouri 94 interchange, and now to Missouri K. My last section, which is anticipated to be completed in 2007, will extend northwest to Interstate 70 in Wentzville.
There is a current initiative in Louisville, Kentucky called 86 64. (www.8664.org) What is 8664?
8664 is a plan to remove Interstate 64 from Louisville's waterfront. "86" is slang that means to remove or get rid of something. The idea is to realign I-64 onto I-265 in KY and IN after an upriver bridge is completed. This will redirect cross-country traffic (mainly trucks) around the city and improve access to and from downtown. It will also allow us to tear down the waterfront expressway from I-65 to west 15th Street. The 8664 vision should improve downtown and be less expensive than the planned Ohio River Bridges Project.
It would be a big change for me but I see it as a rare opertunity to see new places and meet new people.
