About Me

Chuma Whahid Rasul — publisher, author, poet — is also known as Christopher Hicks, Founder/CEO of www.ChumaSpirit.com /Chuma Spirit Books, LLC and the author of The Third Eye of a Butterfly (Pauline Publishing-ISBN: 0-9666802-0-0) which is his self-published book of poetry from the now defunct Pauline Publishing–A Spoken Word Black Press — Chuma’s first publishing venture.
This Brookyn born poet, formerly a member of the spoken word, song and dance trio, Elemental Soul, has performed on stage with the Grammy-nominated French R&B duo Les Nubians and appeared on their compilation CD Les Nubians Presents Echos, Chapter One: Nubian Voyager, which also became a published anthology called Nubian Voyager: Poetry and Music from the Urban Edge (Earth Aware Edition-ISBN: 1-932771-76-X) . He has made appearances on public access television shows and on the poetry compilation CD In The Meantime . . . Vol. 1: Poetry for the Mind, Body and Soul on the Smooth As Jazz Publishing record label. He has appeared at many poetry venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Brooklyn Moon Cafe, The SugarShack, The Brooklyn Tea Party, Demu Cafe, The African Poetry Theater and other venues outside of New York City. He has also performed for educational institutions such as The Boys and Girls Club of America, Marymount University and Rollins University, and made a dramatic unforgettable performance in the Nubiascension Arts Enterprises production of "Poets Cabaret–Seeking the Keys to Night and Day." He has successfully published two books, the aforementioned The Third Eye of a Butterfly and alifepoeminprogress by Tantra (Pauline Publishing-ISBN: 0-9666802-1-9).
He’s largely a fan of poets such as Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Sonia Sanchez, and is known for his ability, through poetry, to juxtapose common problems with spiritual solutions in an effort to heal. Now a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, Chuma anticipates the completion of a novel, and the release of his poetry books that have already been completed. His greatest intention is to build a growing foundation for Chuma Spirit Books, LLC so that other writers, poets, and artists can advance their works. When asked what inspires him to write, his response was, "We all have a purpose in life. I write to fulfill — in my soul — the experience of a universal purpose designed by the God I have discovered within myself . . . and it’s a beautiful feeling that I wish to share with the world."
POEM - WE
We wear bullet proof vest on three eyes
and put on melanin coats when your heart turns cold
We have oral sex with moonbeams to taste the Universe’s love
and wear solar system belts around our waist
to rotate paradigms around our wombs
We, intergalactic rainbow people
orbit around milky ways
and fill them up with soy milk
We, indigenous people of the galaxy
harvest fruit and vegetables on other planets
because chemical warfare has polluted the earth’s soil
We drink wheatgrass
laced with Deepak Chopra and Iyanla Vanzant
and eat Bible psalms for breakfast to digest wisdom
We build computer chips in our brains
and e-mail prayers to God telepathically
We, primordial cotton pickers
plant seeds in slave graveyards to grow ancestral insight
and raise lifetimes from the dead
We, tribal astronauts
fly in rockets driven by angels
to be reborn from the moon’s womb
when the sun sets on this lifetime
We, celestial craftsman
paint pictures colored with peace
and mold laughter like clay to harden our smiles
We, slaves thrown overboard
live in clandestine underwater colonies
and speak in tongues with God manifested through dolphins
We burn incense that smells like cocomango slave blood
and light non-melting candles
to symbolize freedom burning like fire in our hearts
We replace silicone with high self-esteem
so that sisters will stop implanting lies into their breast
We smile our predecessors names in your face
and watch you wither in fear
when you see Malcolm X in our eyes
We travel through time portals
and perform face lifts on Michael Jackson’s past
to correct the plastic surgery done to his future
because he deserves to be loved from childhood to manhood too
We, coitus evolutionaries
mix primitive passion with bare foot freedom rebellion
making love in caves where dinosaurs voyeur at procreation
We, soul mate aborigines
wear cryptic fig leaves on our hearts
so that only our lovers can interpret our feelings
We roll Moses into blunts
and smoke his voice speaking ten commandments
to get high on knowledge
We rub Jesus like lotion onto our souls
so that we’ll never be ashy with sin
We, cosmic virtuosos
play music to the beat of earthly vibration
and sing love with voices riding on shooting stars
We, thespians of spirituality
rewrite scripts to eliminate religion
so that people can act in the likeness of God
instead trying to play the role of God
We, indelibly present
write poetry that carve our souls into trees
that grows higher than the Universe
touching the blackness that mirrors our eternity
because we are eternal

Chuma Whahid Rasul -- poet, writer, publisher - brought his debut of gritty, unapologetically opinionated and emotional poems to the world in The Third Eye of a Butterfly in the late 1990's. Now the butterfly spreads his wings yet again and soars corageously in the poignantly told The Affectation - Overcoming Shame and Removing The Mask, a confessional catharsis about a young, homosexual boy who suffers through the cruel taunting and ostracization of his peers and the rejection he endured from the church's strict disciplinary and hatred belief system. Feeling obligated to measure up to parental expectations and machismo hetero paradigms, the boy reinvented himself and pretended to be someone he wasn't, which consequently, as he grew into an adult, led to him gaining and losing love only to learn a valuable lesson and ultimately attain a special sort of profound love and acceptance of himself. Told through a chronology of poems, prose, screenplays, and memoirs, this book tackles abuse, degradation, and the beautiful triumph of discovering self-love.
