THE NOCTURNAL FLOWERS

About Me

"Hull based The Nocturnal Flowers.....are a 3 piece Indie/Folk Band.As a band they offer something very different, refreshing and once heard or seen live one soon realises that they have an infectious sound and presence about them, which augers well for a unique sound and a very personal identity" (New Musical Express)
Self acclaimed to be Hulls 18th best band, Influences are far and wide with a penchant for performing live, travel, rehearsals, and writing new material. A non-humdrum run of the mill, less than ordinary band consideration to performing live, dependent upon the occaision remains a priority. The Nocturnal Flowers statement of intent is evident through their performance schedule taking their music to Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Barnsley, London,York and Nottingham. Plans are also akin for dates to be confirmed to play further afield including planning to do more live radio performances and interviews so if you host a show, decent venue or just happen to have your own Radio Station get in touch.
Having recently released their debut CD Album ,The Nocturnal Flowers present some interesting and lesser sung about subject matters. Matters of real interest and lyrical content often avoided or considered of little interest, from "Touch The Moon" a sad, sad song about depression and is a personal and touching tribute to Nick Drake who died tragically young suffering from the devastating effect of this illness. " When I beleived in you, about watching a loved close family member lose themselves, wife and children to drink. Vice girl is about the Hull prostitution scene, meeting, falling in love with and trying to rescue a prostitue and failing...miserably. "Vice Girl" seems to be demanded at all performances... This song seems to be becoming near Anthemic..Well we do like to occaisionaly oblige. OhhH and"Waterfall"....well just hold on until the harmonies kick in and our newest song "So in Love With You"...well, its a powerful love tragedy in which the harmonies gives just cause and reason to perhaps want to remain clinging onto life or not! Powerful raw emotion in motion.
CD Album Pre -release ( PLEASE NOTE THE DATE OF CD RELEASE IS WEDS 14TH NOVEMBER @ HULLS THE TIGERS LAIR)we have had the good fortune of having several songs being played on live radio and radio including The BBCs Late Licence, The Mike White Sunday afternoon Show, Jame Hoggarth, and Micheal Brothwell shows with airplay from further afield and cyberspace including The Edge on Folk Radio UK/Radio 365 and Miso88 Radio. and the good fortune of being hosted on many a friends Myspace page.Playing together for less than a year the band have been able to grace The Beverley Folk Festival and have accepted invitations to return to The Filey Folk Festival and Cottinghams impressive Springboard Festival headlining alongside Mike Chapman.
The Nocturnal Flowers actually hail from Hull which is just east of Manchester. Friends of The Nocturnal Flowers are always welcome to travel to Hull (head for the M62/ A63) or by North Sea Ferries. Easier still hitch a lift via the Electric Highway and to our critics yes we travel...very well actually playing many a respected venue in Manchester,Leeds, York, Nottingham Leeds and London, and it might just be possible to Smell The Nocturnal flowers in your town very soon.
The Noctunal Flowers comprise of Paul Marshall (percusion) and Jennie Beastie(violin/guitar and vocals) When Jennie sings people listen.Darren Oakshott offers vocals/harmonica, guitar and intrigue. The blend of energy makes for an interesting evenings entertainment. You decide on what you hear.....Come hear.....Come smell..... Come sense ....The Nocturnal Flowers. Coming to a city near you."For the last few weeks Ive been listening to Waterfall, the latest offering from The Nocturnal Flowers. These guys have delivered yet another hauntingly beautiful composition. On first listen its a simple songSuperbly sung. Perhaps its even a love song or maybe a song about love. The Nocturnal Flowers put so much obvious love and care into their songs its hard to tell. Whatever the case your going to fall in love with Darren Oakshotts thoughtful and precise guitar work, Paul Marshalls sensitive percussion ( a delicate touch envied by other percussionists) andJenny Beasties memorable voice , intriguing harmonies and delicate violin. Listen to Waterfall again and again as it sends you into the depths. The Nocturnal Flowers deserve exposure beyond the bounds of their native Hull. The rest of the world has no idea what its missing." Tim Carroll Folk Words July 2007.
