About Me

Thank you for visiting our myspace community, it's like the rippin' community of characters at our live shows, but different. When myspace starts selling whiskey however, I bet it will be the same. You may or may not know, we are a simple trio of acoustic style, paying the utmost respect to traditional bluegrass while honoring and adapting bluegrass technique to other genres - just because its fun. Our shows consist of Grass It Up original music and some covers tunes that salute the best. The roots, although a bit twisted, have grown together quickly. Six years ago, Shannon and Dave started a band in Alabama called The Blue Hooptie Revival. The Blue Hooptie Revival was one of several musical outlets - each were playing with a number of excellent pickers. The lure of Colorado and a leap of faith brought Dave in 2004, while Shannon continued performing with The Distant Cousins (and played a steady live TV show that was sponsored by the local feed lot!). Prior to moving to CO 9 years ago, I (JB) played in an 8-man groove band called UP before joining an even larger band, Gyration, a brass and funk disco revival (stage name, Papa Rocks). Dave and I started jammin and booking shows, playing regularly with a number of local musicians at The Front Range Barbeque. In May 2005, Shannon came to visit for a 10-day vacation - in which Dave had booked several gigs. By trade, Shannon is a fine goldsmith, and was able to line up permanent work with a local jeweler. The musical fire that existed between the Alabama boys was rekindled, and now we just enjoy good music, inspired by the greatest of influences.

Sounds Like: What is Grass It Up? The word "Grass" indicates the primary type of music we play. We are an acoustic-based trio that plays driving Bluegrass with the occasional Jazz, blues, celtic, rock or country tune. The word "It" refers to what is grassed up. We pursue the right mix of music for our audience, while serving our fix of bluegrass and any other genre that compells us. The word "Up" is refering to the style and energy that is used to express ourselves in live recordings and performances. David Jeffrey had a vision - each member of Grass It Up must play a vital role in the overall performance and outreach to fans - a unified sound for a collective audience. Where did these guys come from? The short answer is from all over the place. The theorectically correct answer is that they all came from the desire to perform like types of music to anyone interested in listening. Who do they sound like? Please enjoy a few songs...
