Caroline Cartens is a young soprano from the Netherlands. She has an intense love for musictheatre and opera and has sung roles like Liù in Puccini's "Turandot", Lauretta in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchiâ€, Donna Anna in Mozart’s “Don Giovanniâ€, Hellena in Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dreamâ€, Anna in Weill’s “Die Sieben Todsündenâ€, Cathleen in Vaugn-Williams' "Riders to the Sea", Second woman, First and Second witch in Purcell’s “Dido and Aenaeas†etc.
Cartens has a great passion for contemporary music and has sung world premieres of several compositions and opera’s. Recently she created a role in the Chiel Meijering opera called “Alzheimerâ€. She performed the title role in “De Dood van Poppaea†(The Death of Poppaea), a new exciting opera by Huba de Graaff, Erik-Ward Geerlings and Bart Visser. In this opera 'Nero' was played by the amazing Dutch actor Hans Dagelet.
At the end of this season Cartens wil be performing in a new play by the Dutch writer Jeroen Brouwers, at the Maastricht Theatre group 'Het Vervolg', directed by Leon van der Sanden.
July 2006 Cartens received her Master Degree of Singing, at 'De Nieuwe Opera Academie', cum laude. At the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, she received her Bachelor Degree. At the conservatoire she studied with Gerda van Zelm, Barbara Pearson and Diane Forlano. She has performed in concert venues such as Utrecht Vredenburg and Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
