Chiel Meijering was born on June 15, 1954 in Amsterdam.
Musical education
Chiel Meijering studied composition with Ton de Leeuw, percussion with Jan Labordus and Jan Pustjens, and piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music.
Compositions
Meijering has written a large number of compositions (over 500), which are performed regularly in The Netherlands and abroad. Many of these works were written for renowned chamber music ensembles.
Meijering states that he considers erotics, sensuality and even obscenity as basic conditions for high-grade performances of his music.
Meijering has an intense love for vocal music and opera. And has written diverse opera's, such as: 'Alzheimer' (2006), 'Gershwin in blue' (1998) (with the Dutch Chamber Choir), 'St. Louis Blues' (1995). In februari 2007 his newest opera 'Styx' will be performed by 'Xynix' and 'De Volharding'.
Meijering also writes for music theatre and has worked with 'Orkater'.
Meijering has worked with renowned Dutch chamber music ensembles,
such as:
the Calefax reedquintet, the Mondriaan Quartet, the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, the Loeki Stardust Quartet, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
In 1981 Meijering was selected by the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra in a competition for young Dutch composers. In 1977 he was selected in the Gaudeamus Competition.
His compositions were used for a ballet by Rudi van Dantzig called: 'Want wij weten niet wat wij doen' in 1985. He also composed for choreographer Toer van Schaik 'De neusgaten van Sophia Loren' (Sophia Loren's nostrils) (1986) and 'Ahnung des Endes' (1987).
In 1988 he wrote a piece at the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. His violin concerto 'Neigingen' (1986, rev. 1987) was performed by Robert Szreder and the Brabant Orchestra. Cellist Pieter Wispelwey and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta performed his piece 'P.W. and his skillet lickers' (1996). He worked with Edo de Waard and his piece was performed for the Queen of the Netherlands.
