HAUNTING SLAYINGS ON CITY's STREETS
HUNTERS POINT: BEST FRIENDS WERE FOUND TOGETHER IN VERY REMOTE PLACE -- STABBED REPEATEDLY
Gregory Jones, 15, and Chris Garcia, 16, were inseparable in life -- and in death.
They met in middle school in San Francisco two years ago and remained friends -- even when Gregory went to live with his sister in Fairfield last year.
Early Saturday, the bloodied bodies of the two young friends were found together in a remote area of Hunters Point, both stabbed repeatedly.
The two apparently had been at a party on Friday in either South San Francisco or the Bayview, said San Francisco police Inspector Dennis Maffei.
Maffei said police have heard accounts that they had been dancing with a girl at the party and were confronted by the girl's jealous boyfriend.
But Maffei said late Monday that the details of the clash were still unclear. He asked anyone with information to contact police.
"It's very sad -- it's heartbreaking when they were best friends, they shared the best times of their lives together and now they are found dead, virtually in each others' arms,'' Maffei said. "They were just too young to have this happen to them.''
Gregory was to turn 16 on July 9.
Police said the last anyone heard from the youths was about 11 p.m. Friday, when they called their girlfriends separately and said they were headed home from South San Francisco after being at a Red Lobster in the Tanforan shopping center in San Bruno.
Their bodies were found in San Francisco at 4:30 a.m. Saturday by a homeless man searching for scrap metal at Fitch Street and Innes Avenue.
''They may have been attacked at a party, or it may have happened there,'' Maffei said. "It is a possibility they were confronted there -- it is very remote, very dark, quiet out of the way location.''
Until about two weeks ago, Gregory had been living with his older sister in Fairfield. The family decided to come back to the city, Maffei said.
His sister, DeShawn Turner-French, said Gregory had just moved back last month to spend the summer taking care of his ailing mother in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley and to attend summer school. He also was getting a summer job through a program sponsored by the mayor's office, she said.
"He didn't look for trouble," she said. He went to school, he loved basketball and he liked to rap.''
Chris would often visit Gregory at his sister's home Fairfield. "They didn't get in any trouble -- they were good kids, they didn't run with any gangs, they didn't sell drugs or anything," Turner-French said. "They hung with each other mostly. They weren't out here being rowdy in the streets or anything. They were pretty good, by today's standards.''
Chris' mother, Gladys Sanchez, said the boys were good friends. "I don't know what happened,'' she said.
Chris had attended Downtown High School in San Francisco and then summer school.
"They met two years ago -- they played basketball, and on the weekends, Greg would come to visit here,'' Sanchez said. "Chris didn't go with that many people -- just with him (Gregory) or alone. He would go to church.
"It's very sad.''
