ULMAN IN THE STUDIO
PREPARATIONS FOR THE NEW ALBUM RUN AT FULL SPEED
At the moment we are very busy to prepare our new album.
Along with that we had a personal change in our band. Demian Kappenstein on drums came in and now we have a lot to rehearse to be ready for the studio at the beginning of March. You can be curious to know which other surprises we have for you.
Probably the album will be released not before the summer.
ULMAN For about ten years ULMAN have built a reputation in the European folk and world music scene.
The four young musicians from Leipzig were enthusiastically welcomed at festivals in Saint Chartier
(F), Kaustinen (FIN), Falun (S) and Roskilde (DK). They received the Folkförderpreis in Rudolstadt
(D) and were nominated for the „Eiserner Eversteiner“ (Germany´s only European folk award)
and have won the „creole 2007 - Prize for Worldmusic from Germany“.
With their new album „VIBES“ ULMAN present a completely new combination of acoustic instruments
– trombone, hurdy-gurdy, diatonic accordion and violin – with modern dance beats. Variety
is their trademark!
Distorted violins, powerful subbasses and jazzy trombone riffs coin the remarkable ULMAN sound.
It seems impossible to pigeonhole their music, though you might feel you have heard some of it
before: touch of rock’n’roll, drum’n’bass sounds and beautiful melodies.
The professionally trained musicians create a high energy mix which guarantees a fascinating,
unique sound experience.
„... No doubt, they are one of the most innovative and high-quality bands in Germany!“

DIRTY LINEN, USA Vibes is like one gigantic bee buzzing arround your head. That´s actually a good thing, though,
and a mark of the progress the German „new folk“ quartett of Andreas, Johannes and Till Uhlmann
and Uli Stornowski have made in the decade since their last album. The buzz comes in
part from the group´s somewhat unusual instrumentation, with its raspy sounds of hurdy-gurdy,
accordion, trombone, and drums. (Some violin, viola, flute, and samples are thrown in for good
measure.) Chalk up the rest to the lively pace of these instrumentals and the gleeful blending
of styles and influences. Though Vibes opens on a fairly bucolic and traditional note with „Farmors
Brudpolska“ (and closes on one with a hidden track), it really is only a matter of about
a half-minute before the band segues into the funky „Filz“. From there it´s a small jump to the
trip hop flavored „Quann Cy Mûl Mouche“, the aptly-titled „Popsong“ and a crunchy ULMANmeets-
Zeppelin „Fiddle Execution“.
ULMAN goes about its task here with skill and verve, putting everything from classical training
to experience as street musicians to self-guided studies of medieval music to work.
Vibes is recommended to anyone who likes their folk music with a bit of a sting to it.
