About Me

Biography

Kayu started out in 2002, trying out all kinds of ethnic music. Our own music became a mixture of all the different worldly styles, influences from eastern music to brasilian. On our most recent album 'Moment' some nordic and jazzy influences can be heard. Lyrics became less important, and we developed a kind of phonetic language to accompany the acoustic music. These have delevoped into our own language, making the music, including the words, totally ours. You can check out our website, discover the 'backdoor' and see some nice videos on the idea behind our own languages (even a cool quasi interview in Wijbrands own language, Raanu!)

Also Rhytm is an important key to our music. Brining all kinds of measures into grooving songs, creating bridges between the prime numbers and dancable music. It's not so much a theoretical approach, but some lines happen to be cool in 11, 15, or even 23/4 beats, and we can't help it :)

The blend of the language and rhytm goes via an interesting course of instruments, ranging from harp to flute, from tar to bass, from didgeridoo to santur, and from guitar to berimbao and many others. These instruments, there intimate sounds and the wood they are made of make the sound of Kayu (means 'Wood' in Indonesian).

In 2006 we recorded our second album, with inspiration from our trip to the Norwegian fjords. This album features a lot of different influences, but can all be defined as our own, Kayu-style world music crossovers. In The Netherlands we appeared on several big festivals like Duyna, Rainbow Park, and United Cultures.

Current projects

2008 is starting to bring us some good inspiration. Currently working on some new songs. Hopefully we'll get some draft versions on here too, to let you taste a little bit.

Currently our Percussionist is abroad, and we are looking for someone who wants to collaborate with us for the next half year. Are you interested? Pls contact us via this page, or [email protected]

--NEW MATERIAL ADDED.

Proud to present: a video of a new song, Zanussae. This is the first recording of one of our new songs. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT? Unfortunately we do not have good quality MP3.
Also some of the audio songs have been updated, check it out!
