Gunhild Nyborg
is a Norwegian singer/songwriter. She works mostly with acoustic jazz music. Her first album "Transitions", a Park Grammofon label, was released in 2006, and has been warmly met by the critics. Gunhild herself writes both melody and lyrics, influenced by different transitions in life. The album consists of her own material as well as songs by other composers, among them the French classic "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg", sung in French. Some of the songs on the album are a product of the sentiments that came out of Gunhilds' spending three years in Hammerfest, Norway, the world's northernmost town, and her encountering the polar landscape and natural light and darkness. Cover photos are shot in Spitsbergen, midday, January 2006. The music on this album differs somewhat from other projects Gunhild have been working on. Lyrics to all songs uploaded here are by Gunhild. Melody to "Sleep" is written by Jens Fossum. Other songs are written by Gunhild. Musicians contributing on the album are all outstanding Norwegian professional jazz musicians: Per Einar Watle on guitar (known from among others Christianssand String Swing Ensemble), Jens Fossum on double bass (Sigurd Köhn Kvartett, Sinatra Songbook), Karl Strømme (Peloton) and Erland Dahlen (Madrugada, XPloding Plastix) on the drums/percussion. Distributor: Musikkoperatørene, www.musikkoperatorene.no. Distributor Japan: Bomba Records. The album has been requested by radio stations in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Belarus, Poland, Turkey, Argentina, Colombia, South Africa and Malawi.
Performing live, Gunhild Nyborg mixes her own songs and quiet contemplative sounds with more up-tempo jazz standards with a latin/django sound. She has recently done projects with guitar or piano and acoustic bass trio, and also with trumpet and drums, in jazz clubs around Norway. She visited Varanger jazz festival this summer with Per Einar, Jens, Karl and Kenneth Ekornes on drums/percussion.
