Harvest was formed by a couple of high school students from Zwolle around 1986 and started out as a streetband. In 1996 they recorded their first CD, on which a selection of cover-versions they played on the streets and in bars. Recording fresh and sponteaneously, they managed to lay down 18 songs in one weekend, and called the result 'If you got a nickle'.
Around the time of their first CD Harvest had grown from three to six members, some of whom had already known national success in bands like Sweet Jane, Prodigal Sons and Rumble Cats .
After the success of their first CD Harvest did a lot of gigs during a period of two years.
The original intention, just to play on the streets for fun and good music, started to get buried after a while. Because neither of the members wanted to loose good memories they decided it was time to stop playing for a while.
However, in 1998 they were asked to contribute to a charity project for the Bridge School (a school for handicapped children, supported by Neil Young through his annual 'Bridge School Benefit). They went into the studio and recorded 'The Old Country Waltz' which is now included on the double-CD 'This note's for you too'.
Being in the studio again (and this time taking more time) brought back the inspiration and Harvest decided to release a second album, called 'Achterdek'. The title is taken from the only song on the album that isn't a cover. This song is about the band leaving the island on a boat, after having played there for a couple of days.
Tracks include Dance, Dance, Dance, Birds and Winterlong by Neil Young, Brass Buttons by Gram Parsons, I'll be your baby tonight by Bob Dylan, You're the reason (once covered by John Fogerty of CCR) and a lot more. The album also features some guestmusicians on horns, slide and pedal steel.
November 2006: Harvest just released their third CD, 'Sail Away'. It's a limited release of 1000 CD's, all for members of PV 'De Kogge' (union of employees working for the city of Zwolle). As a 'Kogge' is a kind of wooden ship from a couple of hundred years ago (widely used for transport of goods), all the songs on the CD have something to do with sailing, rivers or water in general, the title track of course being a Neil Young song.
On MySpace you can listen to a couple of the freshly released tracks.
