I was born in eastern England. I grew up around farmers and uneducated people. My sister, Elizabeth died at seven months. I left school at the age of 12 and was apprenticed to my father, a corset maker, at 13. At 19, I became a merchant seaman, serving a short time before returning to England in April 1759. There I set up a corset shop in Sandwich, Kent. In September of that year, I married Mary Lambert. My business collapsed soon after. My wife became pregnant, and, following a move to Margate, Mary went into early labor. Neither my wife nor our child survived. In September of '74, I met Benjamin Franklin in London. Franklin advised me to emigrate to the British colonies in America, and wrote my letters of recommendation. I left England in October, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 30. I barely survived the transatlantic voyage. The drinking water on the ship was so bad that typhoid fever killed five passengers. Franklin's physician, who had arrived to welcome me to America, literally had to carry me off the ship. I was also an inventor, receiving a patent in Europe for the single-span iron bridge. I developed a smokeless candle, and worked with John Fitch on the early development of steam engines. I'm best known as a radical pamphleteer who anticipated and helped foment the American Revolution through writings, most notably Common Sense, an incendiary pamphlet advocating independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. An advocate of liberalism, I outlined my political philosophy in Rights of Man, written both as a reply to Edmund Burke's view of the French Revolution and as a general political philosophy treatise as well as Common Sense, a treatise on the benefits of personal liberty and limited government, in which I consider society a representation of human ideals, and government a necessary evil. I am also known for my support of deism, taking its form in my treatise on religion The Age of Reason, as well as for my eye-witness accounts of both the French and American Revolutions.

WTF?

Books:

• Common Sense (1776)
• The Crisis (1776-77)
• The Rights of Man (1791-92)
• Age of Reason (1794, 1796)

Other books of interest:
The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer
Hemp: Lifeline of the Future by Chris Conrad

A concept like prohibition of hemp is puzzling and frightening to me. I vividly remember a day when it was our most essential natural resource. We grew countless fields of it to make sails and ropes for our ships. We pressed valuable oils from its seeds. We used its fibers to make the paper on which the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drafted. How can we be true to the ideals upon which these documents were based if we ban the paper on which they were printed? If we knew then what we know now, I'm sure we would have given this resource the constitutional protection it so justly deserves. Who knew?
