Winter safety for your pet
Special thanks to my friends at: for providing very valuable, life-saving information!
It's true that wolves, panthers and other wild animals survive harsh weather, most of the time. Your pets have been domesticated for many, many generations. Most pets don't have sufficient fur, body fat or survival skills. Even a Siberian husky or an Alaskan malamute cannot survive outside without shelter, food and water.
Dogs and cats can be kept outside legally and humanely. The guidelines include a sturdy, leak proof shelter with lots of bedding, like hay or straw.
Here are more winter tips:
Cute coats and sweaters aren't just something cute to dress your dog in. Dogs with very short, thin coats and very little body fat may actually need sweaters and coats. In addition to the obvious small breeds some large breeds, including greyhounds, fall under this heading.
Many elderly dogs have trouble keeping warm in the winter. They may even need a T-shirt or light sweater in the house.
Outdoor exercise must be weighed against the risk of injury. Dogs can fall on the ice and break bones, too.
Salt and other sidewalk de-ices hurt the delicate pads of dog's feet. Wipe off your dog's feet with warm water. Dogs can get sick if they lick their feet to remove the harsh chemicals. They make great pet friendly de-ices on the market.
Anti-freeze kills dogs. Many dogs lap it up gleefully because it apparently tastes good to them. (Its very sugary) So keep it out of reach.

What are the Benefits of Having a PetSitter? Some animals just don't travel well. The time you would spend traveling to and from the grooming services, visits to the Vet. etc. Get it done while you are gone!! Other chores can be attended to while you are away. Pets are in their own home safe and secure, cared for by a true pet lover. Providing peace of mind to the pet owner, not only for the pet, but for the home as well; rotating lights, mail & newspaper retrieval etc. Pets don't need to be transported to boarding facilities, no pick-up deadlines. Clients can call anytime, look on-line or get regular email updates for their own peace of mind!
What are the Benefits for your Pets?Pets are in familiar surroundings, sleeping in their own beds, eating in the same place from their own bowls, playing with their own toys etc. Anything unfamiliar can be upsetting, especially to older pets. Pets aren't traumatized by being uprooted and displaced in a strange place, with other strange animals. Not to mention strange people, with strange smells, sounds and sights. (This is very true for older pets.) Pets are fed, watered, exercised according to their regular schedule, including any medication or special needs. Pets are not exposed to fleas, contagious disease or illness often presented at boarding facilities. The best benefit in-home care can provide is lots of love & attention while their owner is away, thereby easing loneliness a pet may feel. Receiving valuable human attention.
