About Me

.."wmode" value="transparent"..Gavin Whelan is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents of the tin whistle. His eponymous debut recording propelled the tin whistle to centre stage, winning high praise from critics for his crisp, uncluttered phrasing and bright, clean tone. The album, released in 2001, was hailed by one critic as "beautiful, captivating and formidable".Gavin was a founder member of Dál Riada along with Mick Brodrick on bouzouki, Tristan Rosenstock on bodhrán, Frances Cranny on lead vocals, and Zöe Conway on fiddle and backing vocals. The band was a great success and performed at numerous festivals throughout Ireland and abroad. He also featured as lead instrumentalist on many TV shows including Geanntraí, Open House, and The High Reel. He has toured Ireland extensively as a solo artist appearing at such prestigious venues including The Cobblestone, Smithfield, Dublin; Whelans, Wexford St., Dublin; The Sprit Store, Dundalk; The Lobby, Cork; The Wexford Arts Centre; An Cultúrlann, Belfast; and The Civic Theatre, Tallaght. In November 2002 Gavin was invited by music network to take part in Music of the Northlands Tour which included many well-known musicians from England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Faro Islands. The tour culminated in a concert in the Purcell Rooms on the South Bank, London. Influences: I have a lot of Different influnces from Vinnie Kilduff, Mary Begin, Sean Ryan, Paul Mcgrattan,Terry Bingham, Ronan Browne, Paddy Kennan, Dermuid Moynihan. Planxty, Bothyband, i also like singers including kate Rusby, June Tabour, Chris Wood, Joni Mitchell, Family and friends.
Sounds Like: The CD, like Gavins chosen instrument, is simple and unpretetentious but his fluent approach to jigs, reels, hornpipes, highands and slow airs is expressive, tasteful and beautiful, placing the 23 year old in the ranks of great tin whistle exponants such as Mary Bergin, Sean Ryan and Micho himself. Paul Dromey, The Irish Echo.
